How Transcripts Improve SEO for Audio and Video

Open the last thing your business recorded. A webinar, maybe. An interview.

Now list every question that hour answers. Not the subject of it. The questions themselves.

Most people stop counting somewhere around seven.

Keep that list nearby. Everything below is about what happens to it.

The Indexing Part Is Settled. Start After It.

A transcript makes spoken words readable to a crawler. Audio hands a crawler almost nothing it can read. Video is the same problem with pictures on the front. Text fixes it.

Fine. Nobody argues about that anymore. It has been settled since long before anybody worried about AI answers.

So take it as given. The useful question sits one step past it.

You have the words now. Where do you put them?

A Recording Is One Thing. Search Ranks Pages.

Your hour of audio is a single object. One file. Kept in one place.

It cannot be in two places at once. Nor about two subjects.

Search does not work that way at all. Google ranks a page against a query. One page takes the slot. Then the whole thing runs again for the next query, from nothing.

So your seven answers compete for a single slot. Six of them lose. Not for being weak. They simply have no address of their own.

That is what a transcript changes. A recording could never be cut apart. The text can.

An address means something specific here. A URL. Its own title, written for one question. A heading that repeats it. Somewhere for other pages to point.

One Recording, Counted Properly

Take a home inspection company that recorded a forty minute Q&A with a realtor.

Answered properly inside it, five things. What shows up on a typical inspection report. Whether a new build needs one at all. How long the visit takes. What a buyer should do with a bad report. Who ends up paying for the inspection.

Five questions. Each with a different searcher behind it. Almost nothing in common between any of them.

Published whole, that page targets one. Probably the first, since that is where the conversation started. The other four sit in the file. They are also invisible.

Run the demand test and three of them clear it. Now three pages exist where one did before. Same forty minutes of talking. The same words, moved.

Somebody Will Say a Long Page Ranks for Plenty of Queries

True. Worth taking seriously as well.

A thorough page does pick up dozens of nearby searches. That is normal behaviour. Nobody needs a separate URL for every phrasing of one question.

Read the word nearby though. Those queries cluster. They circle a single intent from slightly different angles. One page serves all of them at once.

Now look at your list again. An hour of talking does not hold one intent. It drifts. Somebody asks about pricing. Ten minutes later the subject is hiring. Then a tangent about software nobody uses.

Those are not angles on one question. They are separate questions that happened to share a microphone.

That shape gives search the least to work with. A transcript published in one block hands search exactly that shape.

Somebody Will Say Just Paste the Transcript Under the Video

Standard advice. It does do something, too.

The page picks up vocabulary it never had. Long spoken phrases turn up that nobody would type on purpose. One of them occasionally catches a search with almost no competition behind it.

Then look at what the page is built to answer.

Its title names one subject. The H1 repeats that subject. Links pointing at the page use one anchor phrase. Every signal on it argues for a single thing.

Meanwhile your other six answers sit in paragraph forty. No title mentions them. Not one heading either. Nothing links to them.

Search reads them. It has no reason to rank them.

Somebody Will Say YouTube Already Transcribes It

Roughly, yes. Auto-captions have been decent for a while now.

Notice the domain though. That text lives on a URL you do not own. Attached to a page you cannot fully edit.

Useful for people who find the video there. Not a foundation for anything.

Besides, the real problem survives the move. One video is still one page over there. Same seven answers. Still one slot.

Somebody Will Say Nine Pages Is Nine Thin Pages

Strongest objection on the list. Also the one that proves the argument.

Cutting badly does produce thin pages. Four hundred loose words under a heading nobody searches for. Worse than leaving the transcript whole.

So the cut is a judgment call. Never a mechanical split.

Test each answer alone. Would somebody type that question without knowing your recording exists? Yes means it earns a page. No means it stays a section inside a longer one.

Most hours give up three or four that pass. Sometimes two. Still two more than the recording managed by itself.

What Cutting Hands Back

Not more words. More addresses.

Each surviving answer gets a title written for its question. A heading that repeats it. Point your internal links at it using the phrasing people actually type.

Now the words from your recording sit somewhere search can act on them.

There is a second effect worth naming as well. Separate pages link to each other. A recording cannot link to itself. Three pages built from one hour give you three new places to point at the service page underneath them.

Meanwhile the recording carries on doing its own job. People still watch it. Nothing about the audio changed at all.

Cut Your Own Recording Into Its Answers

Get the transcript. Read it once and mark every spot where a question gets answered.

Write each question out as a plain sentence. Use the words a searcher would reach for, rather than the words you said on the day.

Then run that list through proper keyword research before building anything. Some questions carry real demand. Others carry none whatever.

Keep the ones with demand. Fold the rest back into one longer page.

Do the audio ones and the video ones the same way. The format never mattered here. Only the question count did.

Where the Transcript Argument Stops

A transcript adds no demand. It only redistributes what the recording already held.

Nobody searching those seven questions means seven pages earn seven visits between them. The transcript did its job. Demand was the problem.

Transcripts also fix nothing on a site with no crawlable structure underneath. Sort the site out first. The text can wait a month.

One more limit. Cutting works only on recordings where somebody actually answered something. A panel that stayed general the whole way through leaves nothing to cut. You would be splitting filler into smaller filler.

None of it is fast either. Three to six months before those pages settle, same as any other organic work.

Transcript and Video SEO Work for Calgary Businesses

Most first calls about audio and video open in the wrong place. Somebody asks whether to transcribe. Better question. How many separate answers does that recording actually hold?

SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been sorting that out since 2007. Our Calgary SEO work starts with the question list rather than with the transcript. We decide which answers deserve a page of their own before a single word gets written. Then the SEO services side builds them out properly. The portfolio shows which of those long written fights we took on.

Sometimes the answer is that the recordings can wait. Paid search moves faster than any written library does. Our Google Ads management covers that gap while the pages fill in underneath. Phone To-The-TOP! at (403) 308-5949 and we will tell you straight whether your recordings are worth cutting up yet.

Common Questions About Transcripts and SEO

Do transcripts help SEO?

Yes, though rarely in the way people expect. The lift comes from what you do with the text afterward. A transcript left in one block under a video adds vocabulary to a page about something else. Cut into separate answers, it adds pages that can rank on their own.

Should I publish the full transcript or edit it?

Edit it. Raw speech reads badly and repeats itself constantly. Keep the wording people actually used, then drop the false starts and the crosstalk. The goal is a readable page, never a record of the recording.

Does an auto-generated transcript work for SEO?

As a starting draft, yes. Machine transcripts still mangle names and industry terms. Those are the exact words you wanted to rank for. Read the whole thing through before it goes anywhere near your site.

Is the transcript better on my site or on YouTube?

Your site, for anything you want to rank. Captions on YouTube help the people already watching there. Text on your own domain is the only version you control. It is also the only one your other pages can link to.

How long before transcript pages start ranking?

Three to six months for meaningful movement, the same as any new page. Older recordings are no faster. What matters is whether anybody searches the question. Then how much competition already answers it.
