What Is AEO vs SEO? The Difference Between Ranking and Getting Chosen as the Answer

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. SEO is search engine optimisation. Same alphabet soup, different job entirely.

SEO gets your page ranked in Google’s results. AEO gets your content selected as the direct answer at the top. Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice results, zero-click summaries. That gap between those two outcomes is growing. Worth understanding now, not later.

What AEO Actually Is

What AEO Actually Is

An answer engine is any system that returns a direct answer rather than a list of links. Google’s featured snippets qualify. AI Overviews qualify. Even ChatGPT qualifies when it answers a factual question directly. Siri too. Same for Alexa and Google Assistant.

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so these systems pull from it. Concise answers near the top of the page. FAQ sections with direct Q&A structure. Schema markup that labels content types for machines. H2 and H3 headings phrased as questions.

The goal is position zero. Not rank one. Position zero. The answer sitting above the first organic result, above the box that many searchers never bother scrolling past.

How AEO and SEO Are Different

How AEO and SEO Are Different

SEO optimises for rank. Page one, position one. The metric is visibility in the list of results. Traffic follows from clicks.

AEO optimises for selection. Getting chosen by the search engine as the authoritative answer, displayed directly. Traffic may or may not follow. Plenty of featured snippets pull zero clicks. The searcher got the answer right there and moved on.

The tactics diverge there. SEO leans on backlinks and keyword placement. Page authority matters too. AEO leans on content structure and direct Q&A formatting. Plus answering questions more precisely than any competitor.

Not opposites, though. Odds of getting selected as a featured snippet rise sharply once a page ranks well. Trust built up from thorough crawling is what Google’s answer engines pull from most. Two separate wins, still. One does not guarantee the other automatically, no matter how well the page ranks.

Why AEO Matters Now More Than Before

Why AEO Matters Now More Than Before

Voice search changed the equation first. Ask a smart speaker a question and there is no list of results. One answer gets read aloud. The source gets attributed. Every other page gets nothing.

AI Overviews changed it further. A significant share of Google searches now return an AI-generated summary at the top, sourced from web content. The pages cited in that summary get a signal of trust and some traffic. Pages not cited get none, regardless of organic position.

The practical effect is that content written for Calgary SEO campaigns needs to serve both goals. Rank well in traditional search results and structure content so answer engines can extract from it cleanly. A page that ranks well but gives messy answers is losing ground to pages that rank slightly lower but answer precisely.

How to Optimise for Both

How to Optimise for Both

Start with the question. What exact question does this page answer? State the answer in the first two sentences after the H2. Not three paragraphs in. The first two sentences. Answer engines scrape the text immediately following a heading.

Use FAQ sections. Structure them with proper H3 headings phrased as questions and concise paragraph answers under each. Add FAQ schema markup on top of that. Explicit signals about your Q&A structure go straight to Google and everything else reading the page, human or machine.

Sixty words or less, ideally. Featured snippets and AI Overview excerpts favour tighter, more direct responses over sprawling ones. A tight 50-word answer wins every time over a sprawling 400-word one where the point is buried somewhere in paragraph three.

The Google Ads management page is a working local-search example. Direct Q&A structure sitting right alongside campaign-specific content. No trade-off between answering questions and driving conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. A page needs to rank to have a chance of being selected as a featured snippet or AI Overview source. The ranking work is still required. AEO adds structural signals that improve the odds of being selected once a page is visible. Running only AEO tactics without a strong SEO foundation is building on sand. See the SEO blog for how both fit into a long-term content strategy.

What types of content benefit most from AEO?

Definitional content benefits most. “What is” and “how does” pages carry the best odds for featured snippets and AI Overview citations. Step-by-step process content performs well too. Opinion pieces and brand-heavy promotional copy rarely make the cut. The pattern holds across formats. More direct and concise the answer, the better the chances in both traditional search and answer engine selection.

Is voice search worth optimising for in Calgary?

Worth a look, though rarely the primary focus for local campaigns. B2B and professional services markets pull far less voice search volume than consumer categories do. Most Calgary SEO campaigns prioritise featured snippets and AI Overview positioning over pure voice work. The two overlap heavily anyway. Get the AEO groundwork right and voice mostly follows on its own.
