What Is SGE in SEO?
Search Generative Experience. Four words hiding behind three letters.
Google used that name for roughly a year, then stopped using it. SGE labelled an experiment. Experiments end.
SEO Company To-The-TOP! still fields the question most months. Usually it arrives from an owner holding a strategy deck somebody sold them. The deck is not wrong. It is simply old, and the acronym is how we know.

The Acronym Google Quietly Retired
No farewell post went up. Nothing marked the moment.
Google introduced Search Generative Experience in 2023, tucked inside Search Labs. Opt-in only. You went looking for it. Flipped a toggle. Agreed to test something unfinished. Plenty of searchers never bothered, though we were among the ones who did.
Then 2024 arrived and the feature graduated. It landed in ordinary search results under a new name. AI Overviews.
The technology survived that move. Only the word died.
So the term keeps circulating, though nothing at Google answers to it anymore.

From a Labs Experiment to AI Overviews
Beta names exist to be discarded. That is the entire job of a beta name.
Search Labs worked like a waiting room. Features sat there while Google decided whether they belonged in the product at all. Some walked out. Others quietly did not.
Generative answers walked out. They now sit above the blue links on plenty of queries, and Google uses the AI Overviews name throughout its own documentation.
Two names, one lineage. Nobody at Google has declared the two systems identical, and we will not claim it either. Here is what can be said safely. The SGE name stopped being used. AI Overviews is what shipped.
Worth noticing how little that naming argument matters to a plumber in Bowness.

SGE Is a Date Stamp Not a Feature
Here sits the useful part, and it has almost nothing to do with generative search.
Vocabulary carries a date. Somebody writing SGE in the present tense learned this topic in 2023 and has not revisited it since. The word works as a best-before stamp printed on the side of the advice.
We read it exactly that way. A page still leaning on the acronym tells us when its author last checked the facts. That is real information, delivered free, before we have evaluated a single tactic.
Milk never announces that it turned. You check the carton.

The Sniff Test for Dated SEO Advice
Four words get scanned for, every time a client forwards us an article.
SGE, still written in the present tense. Google AdWords, which became Google Ads back in 2018. Google+ discussed as a ranking play. Meta keywords treated as a live signal.
Any one of them dates the piece. None of them prove the author is a fool. They prove the author stopped reading, and that shows up in the results soon enough.
Our SEO blog gets pruned for the same reason, though nobody has ever thanked us for it. Old posts get updated or they come down.
The client version of this test runs simpler. Ask whoever writes your content when they last changed their mind about something. A blank stare is itself the answer.
None of this requires expertise. It requires a calendar. Run it on articles about AIO and watch half of them fold. Vocabulary drifts elsewhere, which is why what counts as paid SEO needed its own page.

What Survived When SGE Did Not
Rankings still run on the same machinery.
Generative answers changed the shape of a results page. They did not repeal crawling. Indexing also survived, along with the reasons one page outranks another. A site nothing could crawl in 2022 is a site nothing can summarize in 2026.
Owners hear otherwise constantly. Panic sells better than continuity does.
That continuity explains why our Calgary SEO work barely moved when AI Overviews shipped. Technical health first. Content that answers the query. Links earned rather than bought.
How a page actually earns a spot inside those overviews is a longer conversation, and we have written it elsewhere. This one is about the word.

Why SGE Still Turns Up in Sales Decks
Old slides are cheap. Rewriting them is not.
An agency that built an SGE readiness audit in 2023 now owns a deck. A price list too. Renaming the product means rebuilding the argument underneath it. Plenty of firms simply left the slide alone.
We saw one of these not long ago. Same deck, same three letters, a freshened cover date on the front. Nothing behind the cover had moved since the experiment ended.
Some of those audits are perfectly sound under the dated label, in fairness. Still, the label tells you something about what you are buying.
Ask what changed in the deck last year. Do it before signing anything.

What We Tell Calgary Clients About SGE
Nineteen years of this, since 2007. The pattern repeats every few years now.
A new acronym lands. Consultants sell readiness for it. Then the acronym dies. The fundamentals do not. Invoices went out either way.
So we do not sell SGE services. Nor AI Overview services. What gets sold here is SEO services Calgary businesses can audit themselves. Monthly reporting included. We adjust whenever the results page genuinely changes.
Alongside that sits Google Ads management, for owners who need traffic this quarter rather than next year. Paid search has a vocabulary problem of its own. Another post, another day. There is a standing page here on recent changes in SEO, updated when something actually shifts.
Common Questions About SGE in SEO
Does SGE still exist?
Not under that name. Google ran Search Generative Experience as an opt-in Search Labs test starting in 2023. Generative answers now appear as AI Overviews instead. The label retired. Its underlying idea did not.
What replaced SGE in Google Search?
AI Overviews. Those are the generated summaries sitting above the organic results. Google uses the AI Overviews name across its own help documentation, so that is the term worth adopting.
Is SGE the same thing as AI Overviews?
Close enough for a conversation. Too loose for anything you are paying for. SGE named an opt-in experiment, while AI Overviews names the feature that shipped. Treating them as one thing works fine until somebody asks you what changed in between.
Should I optimize my site for AI Overviews?
Optimize the site. Every overview is downstream of it. Crawlable pages. Clear answers to the question actually asked. A site audit that finds what is broken. Any of that beats a tactic aimed at one SERP feature.
How can I tell if SEO advice is out of date?
Check the vocabulary before you check the argument. An acronym nobody uses anymore dates the writer instantly. Then hunt for a revision date on the page itself. Absent one, assume the worst.
