What Private Schools Need to Know About SEO

The advice is not hard to find. A page for every grade. Local keywords with your city in them. Reviews. A Google Business Profile filled in properly. Then some content about your curriculum. All of it is sound. This site covers it elsewhere, so none of it gets repeated here.

Only none of that is what makes a school different. What makes a school different is not the writing. It is the clock.

A Pipe Bursts When It Bursts

A Pipe Bursts When It Bursts

Think about how demand reaches most businesses.

A furnace fails in February. Another in July. Somebody’s basement floods on a Sunday night. None of it is planned. It arrives all year, more or less. So a plumber’s year has peaks in it. What it does not have is a month after which the work is gone.

Whatever a ranking is worth to him, he collects it from the month it arrives. March, October, it makes no odds. Nothing got lost except the months in between.

Your year is not like that. Demand for a school does not trickle in. Instead it gathers. It arrives. Then it goes. Families look. They visit. Then they apply. They are finished for the year. Some families move mid-year, and a school will take them. Only that is not the shape of the year. The bulk comes together, then it is gone. An AdWords keyword export shows that gathering month by month, plainly enough. Those clustered months are also where high CPC keywords get expensive.

Nobody Loses a Year of Plumbing

Nobody Loses a Year of Plumbing

A plumber ranking in month seven rather than month four has lost three months of work. Real money, and it is gone. Yet three months is what he lost. Next month is still there.

A school ranking in month seven rather than month four may have lost a season. The families who were looking have looked. They toured. Then they chose. Whatever you rank for in June, the choosing is behind them.

So what got lost was not three months. It was the year.

Same lateness. Then two different bills.

So the timeline everybody quotes, three to six months before anything moves, lands differently on you. For most businesses that is a wait. Here it is a date. A wait is what plumbers competing in search deal with, no fixed date attached.

Three to Six Months Before What?

Three to Six Months Before What?

Ask how long SEO takes and a number comes back. It is the right number. Yours is no exception. Only nobody ever finishes the sentence.

Three to six months before what?

Every business gets the same answer. Then everybody reads it as three to six months before the results start. Fine, where results may start in any month. Yours may not.

So the number was never a duration for you. Rather it is a distance, measured back from something.

That something is a month. And the month is not printed in your prospectus.

The Season You Plan Against Is the One You Are Sure Of

The Season You Plan Against Is the One You Are Sure Of

A school knows its own dates. Say an open house in the autumn. Applications closing in the winter. Then offers going out in the spring. Those dates are certain. They are written down. So they are the dates the marketing gets built around.

Only those are dates a family arrives at. They are not the date a family starts.

Somebody sits down at nine on a Sunday evening. They type your city and the words private school into a search box. Nothing has been decided. No shortlist exists. Nobody has booked a tour. That evening is the one your page has to be sitting there for. Nothing on your admissions schedule tells you when it falls.

Go and Find the Month

Go and Find the Month

You do not have to guess at this.

Open Search Console. Set it to the last twelve months. Then look at nothing except when the traffic arrives. Never how much. Just the month.

Now put your application deadline beside that.

Maybe the traffic climbs in the month or two before the deadline. Then your school and your families run on one schedule, and you count straight back from it. Or maybe the searching starts a long way earlier, and your busiest month sits well ahead of the date on that form. That would mean the work you built around the deadline arrived after the looking had started.

No statistic about other schools settles that one. Yours is two screens away.

Somebody Will Point at Google Ads

Somebody Will Point at Google Ads

They should. Paid search is the right answer to a deadline, and this is a business where it earns its keep. An ad can run the week you switch it on. It does not care that you started late. So it is there for the season you are in. Run the Google Ads campaign. Nobody should feel clever or careless about it.

Only look at what that concedes.

You are using a channel that starts in a week to cover for a channel you wanted a year ago. Both are true at once. So the ads buy you the season in front of you. They buy nothing about the one after it.

The First Season Is the Expensive One

The First Season Is the Expensive One

Now the good news.

Slowness cuts both ways. A page taking the better part of a year to arrive does not vanish in a year either. Rankings soften over time. They do not reset.

So the second admissions season does not begin where the first began. Instead it begins where the first finished. You pay the waiting once.

Nothing about the ads works that way. Those stop the day you stop them.

Where the Private School SEO Argument Stops

Where the Private School SEO Argument Stops

None of this changes the work. The pages run the way they run for a law firm. So does the technical job. The writing too. Nobody hands a school a special version of it, and the same links get earned the same slow way. What changes is when you start.

The argument also dies in one place. Take students on a rolling basis and there is no season, so nothing here reaches you. Read the standard advice instead.

And a school turning families away every spring has no marketing problem. It may have other problems. This is not one of them.

What SEO Company To-The-TOP! Does for Schools

What SEO Company To-The-TOP! Does for Schools

Everybody wants SEO to work faster than it does. That wish turns up often enough at To-The-TOP!, here in Calgary. Schools want it too, and their reason is better than most.

So the first conversation here is often about a date rather than a keyword. Nothing about search engine optimization is fast, and To-The-TOP! has been doing it since 2007. Then keyword research and the writing follow from wherever that date lands. Where the date has already gone past, we say so. A Google Ads campaign covers the season while the slower half matures.

No guarantees. Three to six months is the plain range, and it runs the same for a school as anybody. What differs is what you count toward. The portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached.

Common Questions About Private School SEO

Is SEO different for a private school?

The work is not. Pages, technical fixes and writing all run the way they run for a plumbing company. What differs is the calendar behind it. Demand arrives in a season, so being late costs more than a few slow months.

When should a school start SEO?

Count back three to six months from the month families begin looking, rather than from your application deadline. Those are not always the same month. A website audit and your own Search Console data show you which is which.

Should a school run Google Ads instead of SEO?

Not instead. Ads are the right tool where the season is close and the rankings are not. An ad starts the week you turn it on. Only it stops the week you turn it off, and a ranking does not.

Do local keywords matter for private schools?

They matter a great deal. Hardly anybody drives a child across a province every morning. That part of the advice is standard, and this site covers it.

How many families does a school need from search?

Fewer than most businesses need. One family can be worth a decade of tuition. So the arithmetic on a school website is unlike anywhere else. That is a reason to be patient, never a reason to skip the work.
