What to Avoid When Hiring an SEO Company

Over 180,000 SEO agencies operate in North America. Most won’t move a ranking. A handful will actively hurt the site you give them access to. Knowing what to screen for going in matters as much as knowing what to look for.

These are the patterns worth watching before you sign.

The Ranking Guarantee Pitch

The Ranking Guarantee Pitch

Any SEO company that promises you a #1 ranking on Google is either confused or not being straight with you. Google’s own documentation says no outside party can guarantee organic placement. Nobody controls the algorithm except Google itself. Agencies that lead with guaranteed rankings are describing outcomes they cannot deliver.

This matters. Most guarantee pitches are built to sound reassuring. That is part of the problem. Most clients want certainty. A company willing to promise it is often the worst kind to hire. The ones who do this typically also use tactics that get sites penalized. Spammy link building. Keyword stuffing. PBN links. A client ran a site doing $20K per day in revenue. Within three months of a spammy link campaign, Google blacklisted it. Six months to recover. Penalties like that hollow out a business before anyone figures out what happened.

Good Calgary SEO practitioners talk about timelines and competitive landscapes. What movement looks like in months three through twelve. They do not promise position one.

The Black Box Problem

The Black Box Problem

A legitimate SEO company should explain what they are doing each month. What links are being built and from where? Content being created? Technical changes queued? Deflecting those questions with “proprietary process” language usually means protecting something that would not hold up under scrutiny.

The strategy should be explainable in plain terms. You do not need to understand technical SEO to grasp the approach. An agency that makes it hard to follow along at the pitch stage won’t suddenly become more transparent once you have signed.

Also watch for agencies that rank for “best SEO company [city]” using paid search ads, not organic results. That is not a demonstration of their skill. It is advertising. The actual test is whether they rank their own site organically for competitive terms. Many do not.

Contract Traps Worth Reading Carefully

Contract Traps Worth Reading Carefully

Long contracts without an exit clause are a structural risk. 12 months in with no exit clause means paying regardless of results. Benchmarks should be on paper before you sign, not invented six months later. “Improve your online presence” in a contract is not a benchmark.

Auto-renewal clauses can lock you in for another year without notification. Some agencies also build proprietary software into the engagement. Tools tracking your rankings or reporting access that disappear when the contract ends. Ask what happens to your data and your reporting if you leave. That answer is informative on its own.

Who Is Actually Doing the Work?

Who Is Actually Doing the Work?

Some agencies sell you a senior strategist and then hand your account to a junior analyst on day one. Ask directly who will be doing the work each month. How many accounts they manage. What communication looks like. Salespeople on every call, never the actual SEO doing the work. That tells you something about how the agency organizes accounts.

References matter more than testimonials. A testimonial on a company website is curated. Direct conversations with past clients are not. Get two or three references and actually call them. Ask what results they saw at six months and twelve months, and whether communication was clear throughout. Specialist agencies with focused expertise often outperform large digital shops where SEO is one of thirty services.

The SEO portfolio should show real keyword rankings on real sites, not just screenshots of traffic. Anyone can screenshot an analytics graph. It tells you nothing about what happened. Verifiable rankings in Google are harder to fake.

Reporting That Hides More Than It Shows

Reporting That Hides More Than It Shows

Agencies that report only traffic metrics and not conversions are telling half the story. Traffic without leads or revenue is not a business outcome. Agencies focused on impressions and raw visitors may be optimizing for the report. Not for your results.

Ask upfront how they define success. What KPIs will they actually track? A vague answer there means vague reporting too. Months to produce a site audit before strategy discussions start is also too long. A website audit should be part of the onboarding, not a reason to delay starting for three months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an SEO company guarantee first-page rankings?

No. Google itself has confirmed that no one outside Google can guarantee organic placement. Promises of first-page rankings are either false or based on tactics that risk your site’s long-term standing. An agency offering guarantees is a warning sign, not a selling point.

What contract terms are red flags?

No exit clause and auto-renewal without notification are two. Undefined success metrics are a third. Proprietary software you lose when you leave is the fourth. A legitimate agency offers at least a 30-day cancellation option and defines performance benchmarks before signing.

Should I ask to speak with past clients?

Yes. Testimonials on the agency’s website are curated. Direct conversations with past clients are not. Focus on results at six and twelve months, not just satisfaction scores. Communication quality is the other thing worth probing. That conversation usually tells you more than any sales presentation does.

Is a cheap SEO service ever worth it?

Rarely. SEO requires skilled labour and consistent output. Tools that cost money. Services priced below the market rate are usually cutting corners somewhere. Often that means thin content. Low-quality links. Work outsourced to markets with minimal quality control. In Google Ads management the same principle applies. Ongoing attention quality determines the outcome.
