How to Create an SEO Budget That Drives Results
The standard method fits in a paragraph. Take a share of revenue. Put some of it toward writing, some toward fixing what is broken, some toward earning links. Then watch what comes back and adjust.
That method is sound. It is also written up properly elsewhere on this site. Rates too, along with what a Calgary month runs. So this page will not repeat any of it. Instead it goes after the number your budget sheet never asks you for. That number decides whether the rest of the row does anything.

Every Other Line Pays Out in the Month You Spent It
Open the budget you already keep. Then read straight down the rows.
Rent buys this month’s premises. Wages buy this month’s work. Materials turn up Thursday. A Google Ads campaign bought clicks this morning, and by Friday you can count them.
Every one of those rows spends and delivers inside its own square. Money goes out in March. What you bought shows up in March. The sheet was built for costs that behave that way.
SEO does not behave that way. This month’s money buys a result that lands in a month sitting nowhere on the page. Three to six months out, most of the time. Longer where the market is crowded.
Everybody in this trade says so. Almost nobody follows the sentence back to the budget it wrecks.

An SEO Budget Has Two Numbers. Nobody Asks for the Second.
The sheet wants a monthly figure. You give it one. The cell takes the number and the meeting moves on.
Meanwhile a second number was decided in that same meeting, quietly, by nobody. How many months will you still be paying that figure?
That is the number the work answers to. Not the size of the cheque. The count of them.
Fifteen hundred a month, still going in month fifteen. Four thousand a month, stopped in month five. The second one is the bigger number on the sheet. It also quit a stretch short of the part everyone was waiting for.
Money leaves an SEO budget every single month. Results do not arrive every month. Stop in the middle and you have paid for the whole of the first thing. Meanwhile you collected the thinnest part of the second. People shopping the low end often ask what Stupid Simple SEO costs.

The Bad Quarter Sits Inside the Window
Now look at the length of that window. A year. Often longer than a year.
Then ask what else lives inside a year. A quiet quarter. Then a truck that picks its own moment to die. One month where the phone simply does not ring the way it did.
A year rarely passes in any business without one of them. Yours probably has one in it. Mine has.
So your SEO budget is not being asked to survive a good year. Rather, it is being asked to survive an ordinary one. An ordinary one has a hole in it somewhere.

The Line With Nothing to Show Yet
Picture the quiet month arriving. Somebody opens the sheet and hunts down the rows for something to cut.
Rent survives. Wages survive. The ads survive, because you watched the clicks arrive on Friday.
Then the eye lands on the line that has produced nothing yet.
By construction, that line is SEO. Not through anybody’s failure. It is simply the only row whose output has not turned up. And it has held that position longer than any other row.
Nobody makes a foolish decision here. The cut looks obvious. It is obvious. That is exactly the trouble.
The line most likely to get cut is the line least able to survive being cut.

Set the SEO Budget You Could Pay in a Bad Month
Which turns the whole exercise around. The question was never what you can afford this month.
Open your books. Go back three years and find your worst month. Not a catastrophe. Just the flat one, the one you would rather not repeat.
Now write your proposed monthly figure beside it. Then put one plain question to the pair of them. Would you have paid this, that month, for work that had shown you nothing yet?
Answer yes and you have a budget. It will still be running when the results turn up. That was the only property that ever mattered.
Answer no and you do not have a budget. You have a plan with a cancellation date already inside it, and you have just learned roughly when. Better to learn it now than in month nine.
No statistic about other companies settles this one. Yours is sitting in your own books. Ongoing SEO support gets priced by the month for a reason. The months are the part you are buying.

There Is a Floor, and Under It Nothing Moves
None of which makes the amount irrelevant. There is a floor, and it is real.
Under a certain level the work stops happening at all. An hour a month is not a program. Pages do not get written. Nothing broken gets fixed. Nobody goes out and asks a single person for a link, and no serious keyword gets contested by anybody.
So if your worst-month figure lands under that floor, the answer is not a thin SEO budget stretched over two years. Stretching it that far buys a slow nothing.
The answer might be a different channel for a while. Paid search bills by the click and shuts off the same afternoon you decide to shut it off. It suits a business that cannot yet promise next year to anybody, including itself.
Then come back to search when you can promise the months.

What an SEO Budget Buys Here
SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing SEO in Calgary since 2007. Long enough to have watched good work get cancelled two months early. So we would rather quote a number a client keeps paying than one that impresses a room.
A budget you cancel is not a smaller version of a budget you keep. It is a different outcome entirely.
We report positions every month, so nobody has to guess whether the content and the traffic are moving. Our Google Ads management covers the businesses that need something switched on this week. And the SEO portfolio shows what the patient version looks like after nobody blinked.
No guarantees, and no month where a ranking is promised. Only the months, which were always the thing. SEO budgets in a downturn get cut by the month, and the month decides everything. Most of retaining SEO clients is just not surprising them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should an SEO budget run before I judge it?
Give it six months before you form a strong opinion, and longer in a competitive category. Judging search engine optimization at week eight tells you almost nothing. Look for movement rather than outcomes early on. Positions climbing from nowhere into the twenties is a real signal, even though it puts nothing in the till yet.
Is it better to spend more for fewer months, or less for longer?
Less for longer, almost always. The work is cumulative, so it needs to keep happening rather than happen intensely. A big spend that stops early pays the full cost of the waiting. Then it collects almost none of what the waiting was for.
What happens to the work if the budget stops halfway?
Nothing gets repossessed. Your pages stay up, the fixes stay fixed, the links you earned stay pointed at you. What stops is the part that was still accumulating. So the site sits where it got to. Competitors keep moving. Yet you carried the cost of every month without reaching the position those months were buying.
Can I start small and raise the SEO budget later?
Yes, and that is usually the better shape. Start at a figure a bad month cannot argue with. Then raise it out of results rather than out of hope. Raising the figure later costs you nothing.
Where does an SEO budget usually get cut?
In a slow quarter, by somebody with a spreadsheet open and a hard decision to make. It gets cut for being the only line with nothing to show. That is a fact about the calendar rather than a fact about the work. Setting the figure low enough to survive that quarter is the whole of the defence.
