How Many SEO Ranking Signals Are There?
You came here for a number. A round one gets quoted constantly. It has been quoted for years, often by people who never went looking for where it came from.
Nobody here is going to hand you one either. Not out of coyness. The count has no answer, and the reason turns out to be more useful than a number would have been.
Individual verdicts are settled elsewhere on this site. Whether page speed counts. Dwell time as well. Then the question of reviews feeding local results. Those pages exist, and they are the useful ones. This page is about the counting itself.
Every Question Anybody Asks Is a Membership Question
Go and read the headings on any SEO site. This one included.
Is HTTPS a ranking signal. Does domain authority count as one. What about E-E-A-T. Then click-through rate. User experience next. Somewhere below that, a meta description.
Dozens of them, everywhere you look. Every single one is a membership question. Does this thing belong in the set?
Now go hunting for the pages asking how large the set is. There are almost none. Anywhere. The field has been at this for twenty-odd years.
That gap deserves a moment. An industry answering membership questions all day has never once settled the count. Nothing about that is avoidance. It simply does not have the shape people assume it has. What we cover on domain authority answers one of those membership questions directly, without settling the larger count. What counts as topical authority in SEO is another membership question nobody has ever turned into a number.
A Count Needs a Unit
Counting anything at all requires knowing what one of them is.
Take page speed. Is that one signal? Plenty of people describe it exactly that way. Only page speed is not one measurement. There is how long the server takes to answer. Then how long the largest thing on the screen takes to arrive. A third measurement watches whether the layout jumps around while it loads.
So is page speed one signal, or is it three?
Both answers are ordinary. Each one gets given, by people who know the subject well. Meanwhile they do not add up the same.
Now take a link pointing at your page. One signal? Or is the anchor text one thing, where the link came from a second, how long it has been there a third?
Nothing anywhere settles that. No standard definition exists of what makes one signal one. Whether word counts matter for SEO runs into the same unit problem, since nobody agrees what counts as one.
So the Number Moves With the Describing
Watch what falls out of that.
Two careful people can look at the same machinery and come back with different totals. Neither one miscounted. One cut it into coarse pieces. The other cut it into fine ones, and the pieces were never marked in advance.
Which makes whatever number you were handed a fact about somebody’s list. Never a fact about Google.
That is no accusation. Building a list means choosing a grain, since you cannot write anything down without deciding how finely to slice it. Every choice of grain produces a different total from the same thing underneath.
The number moved with the describing. It never moved with the thing being described.
Somebody Will Point at the Leak
A well-known leak put thousands of named attributes into public view. Every one of them countable.
Fair enough. Only look at what got counted there. Fields in a system. A field is a thing engineers name so that software can refer to it. Fields get named for whatever the code needs. Never for whatever a marketer would call a signal.
Notice the size, as well. Thousands. That sits nowhere near the round number people quote at each other.
So the leak settled nothing about the count. What it produced was a second count, in a second unit. The two never touched.
The Question Underneath Is a Better One
Hardly anybody asks how many out of idle curiosity.
People ask because they want to know how much of this there is. Whether the work has a bottom to it. Also whether somebody could reach the end of the list and be finished.
That question does have an answer. It is a reassuring one.
The list is long. Meanwhile the part carrying real weight is short, and it has stayed short for a long time. Whether your pages can be reached and read at all. Then whether they answer what somebody actually typed. And whether anybody else on the web treats you as worth pointing at.
Most of what else appears on those lists sits a long way behind.
So the count was never the thing standing between you and knowing what to do next. A short list of heavy things was sitting there the whole time.
Where the Ranking Signals Argument Stops
None of this says Google works from few inputs. It plainly uses a great many, and it has said so.
The argument is narrower than it sounds. It concerns counting them. Never whether they exist.
Nor is any of it a claim about what sits inside the company. Nobody outside Google can settle that, so this page will not pretend otherwise.
A long list is still worth reading, too. Reading one teaches you the shape of the field faster than most things will. Just read it the way you would read anybody’s list. As one person’s way of cutting something up.
Try It on the List You Were Given
Find whichever list of ranking factors you have been working from.
Go down it slowly. Then put two questions to every line. Could this one be described as three things? Then reverse it. Could these three be described as one?
Do it for a dozen entries.
Should the answer come back no every time, somebody built that list with real care and it is worth keeping. A yes coming back over and over means something else. You have found what the number was made of.
No statistic about other people’s lists settles that one. Yours is on the screen in front of you.
What SEO Company To-The-TOP! Does With a List of Ranking Signals
A list of ranking signals turns up often enough at To-The-TOP!. Printed out, sometimes. The hope being that somebody works through it top to bottom. Often the first useful hour goes somewhere else entirely.
The work starts with the content on your pages and who can reach them. That means keyword research first. Then search engine optimization aimed at the words your customers use, rather than the ones a list suggested. For businesses across Calgary, the short heavy part tends to do nearly all of it. Where traffic is needed sooner than patient work delivers, a Google Ads campaign covers the months in between.
No guarantees. Three to six months before positions move meaningfully, same as always. The portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached, and To-The-TOP! has been doing this work in Calgary since 2007. A fuller treatment of bolding sits outside that list, though clients ask about it almost every week.
Common Questions About SEO Ranking Signals
Is it true there are 200 ranking factors?
A round number like that gets repeated far more often than it gets checked. Treat it as a figure of speech rather than a measurement. Nobody outside the company has counted whatever Google works from. Counting would need a definition of one signal. Nobody has written one.
Does the number matter for my website?
Very little. Knowing there are two hundred of something, or two thousand, changes nothing you would do on a Tuesday. The short list of heavy things does not move when the count moves.
Why do so many SEO articles publish a number?
A number reads as authority, and it costs nothing to write. Checking one would need an agreed unit. There is none, so the figures stay in circulation.
Which ranking signals actually carry weight?
Being reachable and readable. Answering the search query somebody typed. Earning links and mentions from places that had a reason to point at you. Those have carried weight for years and they still do.
Should I ignore ranking factor lists completely?
No. A good list is a useful map of the field and worth an afternoon. Read it as somebody’s description rather than as an inventory, then work from the short end of it.
