How to Do Keyword Research on Reddit

Open a thread. Then scroll straight past the question at the top.

That question is written in the wrong words. Somebody arrived without knowing what the thing is called, so they described it instead.

Now read the first good reply. Somewhere inside it sits a sentence beginning “you mean.” That sentence is the research.

The Method Most People Bring to Reddit

Search a subreddit for your product. Read the threads that come back. Copy out any phrase that sounds like something a real customer would type.

Then paste the pile into a keyword tool and check which phrases carry volume.

Nothing wrong with that. It works. Certainly beats staring at an empty seed box, waiting for inspiration about your own market.

Yet it treats Reddit as a slow keyword tool. Phrases harvested by hand instead of by API.

Phrases are the easy part. Reddit holds something no export file can carry.

A Thread Records a Correction

Threads have a shape no tool produces.

Someone asks in their own language. Then somebody who knows the field answers in the field’s language. Between those two comments sits an arrow, pointing from one word to the other.

The arrow is the asset.

Here is one. “Water comes up through the floor drain whenever it rains hard.” Somebody replies underneath. “You need a backwater valve.”

Two vocabularies. One public record joining them.

The homeowner will never type “backwater valve.” They do not have the term yet. Meanwhile the plumber will never write “water comes up through the floor drain” on a service page. Nobody in the trade talks that way. So both sides go hunting for each other using words the other one does not own.

The thread is where they meet. That exchange gets written down and dated. It happens nowhere else.

Watch what the asker does next, too. Frequently they post once more, using the new term themselves. That second message shows the swap took.

Go and Find the Correction

Search the symptom. Never the product name.

Product-name searches return threads written by people who already know the product name. Those people found you. They are not the ones missing.

So describe the problem instead. Write the complaint the way somebody living with it would write it. Badly, if that is how it comes out.

Reddit’s own search box is poor. Use Google for this instead. Type the symptom description, then add the operator that pins results to one site.

site:reddit.com

That line does more than any subreddit search box will. Google indexes the comments, so a search reaches the reply and not only the question. Reddit’s own search leans heavily toward posts, so the reply you want tends to stay buried.

Not every correction announces itself, either. Sometimes the reply just answers using a different word, never flagging the swap at all. Those still count. Read for the noun that changed rather than for the phrase “you mean.”

Two things get written down from each thread. The word the asker used. Then the word the reply handed back.

Keep them as a pair. Never as two entries on a list. A list drops the arrow, and the arrow was the point.

Twenty threads is usually enough to see it happening. The same correction keeps turning up, because the same misnaming keeps turning up.

Somebody Will Say Reddit Is Too Small a Sample

Correct. Also beside the point.

Twenty threads tell you nothing about demand. Nobody should pretend otherwise. A subreddit is a self-selected room of people who post their problems on the internet at midnight. As a sample of your market, close to worthless.

Still, demand is not what you came for. You came for translation.

One correction proves a mapping exists. That is a smaller claim than “many people search this,” and a different kind of claim entirely. Vocabulary behaves this way. Somebody had to be told the term. So the term was not obvious. Which means other people probably do not have it either.

A second objection sits underneath the first one. Reddit users skew young and technical, so their vocabulary is not your customer’s vocabulary.

Fair, up to a point. Yet the skew runs toward knowing more jargon rather than less. A room full of technical people needs fewer corrections than the general public would. So whatever gap still shows up on Reddit is probably wider out in the market.

How many other people? Wrong question to put to Reddit. Take that one to the tool.

Reddit answers what they call it. The tool answers how many of them. Give each one the question it can actually handle and both get easier.

Both Words Are Rows in the Tool

Paste the pair into any keyword tool. Watch what it does with them.

You get two rows. A volume figure beside each. Nothing else.

No column says “this one is the beginner’s version of that one.” The tool has no field for it. Grouping runs on string similarity or on overlapping results, and the pair fails both tests. The words share no letters. Early on they often share no ranking pages either.

So the relationship you found is precisely what the export throws away.

Which means keeping it yourself. A document with two columns. What they say. Our word beside it.

That document ages better than the keyword list beside it. Tools refresh their volume figures every month. Nobody refreshes your translation table but you.

Check the customer phrase in the tool anyway. Sometimes it returns nothing whatsoever. Zero volume. Just a dash in the column where a number should sit.

That result is not a dead end. Tools round small numbers down to nothing routinely, and a phrase somebody typed on Reddit is a phrase somebody types. Publish the page. Then open Search Console a few months later and read the query report. Only your own data was ever going to settle it.

Which Word Do You Target?

Both. On one page, most of the time.

The industry term carries the volume. It carries the competition too, since every company in the trade writes with it.

The customer phrase carries almost nothing. Ten searches a month. Frequently fewer.

Take it anyway.

Those ten arrive earlier than everybody else. A person typing about water on the basement floor has decided nothing yet. No shortlist. Nobody phoned for a quote yet. They are still working out what to call the problem.

So put their phrase in a heading. Answer it in plain words. Hand them the industry term inside the first two sentences. That is the favour they came for. People remember who did it.

Then the industry term stays in play too. You wrote the whole answer around it.

One caution. Never bolt both phrases into a single sentence to catch them together. That reads as written for a machine, because it was. Give the customer phrase a heading of its own and a paragraph underneath. The industry term will carry the rest of the page without help.

Where Reddit Keyword Research Stops

Plenty of markets have no room.

Consumer problems get covered well. Home repair. Software. Anything involving a car.

Trades and B2B, far less. A narrow industrial market runs thin. Forty posts in total, maybe, across every subreddit that touches it. You can read all of them in an afternoon and come away with nothing.

Local searches run thin as well. A city subreddit lives on recommendation threads. People there ask who to hire, rarely what a thing is called.

Corrections expire, too. A term catches on. Then askers start using it themselves. The correction stops happening. Your arrow disappears. So re-run the same search a year later and see whether it still fires.

Some threads carry no correction at all. Everybody in that room already speaks the same language. Nothing there to take.

One more limit worth naming. This finds you words. It says nothing about whether a page built on those words can outrank what is already sitting in the results. Different job.

How We Use Reddit for Calgary Keyword Research

SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing this since 2007. Nineteen years. Reddit is not where our keyword research starts, and it is not where it ends.

It gets used for one job. Finding the customer’s word when a client only has their own.

That happens constantly. A trade business spends twenty years talking to other trades. Everybody in the room says “backwater valve,” so the website says it too. Meanwhile the homeowner searching at midnight says something else entirely.

Our Calgary SEO work puts both words on the page. The translation table sits beside the keyword list on every account we run. Solo practitioner here, so the person reading those threads is the person you hired. No junior gets handed the reading.

The pairs change what an SEO audit looks for, too. A site can be technically clean and still miss every word its customers use.

Some customer phrases are worth testing before anybody writes a page around them. Even a small Google Ads management budget answers that sooner than organic will. Organic needs three to six months before meaningful movement shows. No guarantees on that, and no ranking promises.

Our full SEO services in Calgary run on the same reading. Ask about the translation table before you sign with anybody. (403) 308-5949.

Common Questions About Keyword Research on Reddit

What does r/SEO actually recommend for keyword research?

Mostly the standard route. Pick a tool. Build a seed list from it. Then filter by volume and difficulty. Check the results before committing to anything. Sound enough advice. The threads rarely mention Reddit itself as a source, though. Odd, given the corrections sit in the same subreddits where people ask the question.

Can Reddit replace a keyword tool?

No. Reddit carries no volume data and never will. It tells you what a phrase is. Never how many people type it. Use both. The tool checks whatever Reddit turns up.

How many threads is enough?

Twenty on a consumer topic will show you the repeat corrections. Narrow markets hold fewer, so read whatever exists. Stop when the same pair keeps appearing and nothing new arrives.

What if nobody in the thread gets corrected?

Then that room speaks one language, and no gap exists to find. Move on. Try a more general subreddit instead of a specialist one, since specialists rarely need correcting.
