What Is a Local SEO 3-Pack?

Search plumber Calgary on a phone. A map loads before any website does. Three business listings sit underneath it. Star ratings. A call button on each one.

That block is the local SEO 3-pack.

Most explanations stop right about there. Then they tell you to get into it.

Worth asking the harder question first. Why three?

Three Listings, a Map, and Everything Above the Blue Links

The 3-pack is Google’s local results block. People also call it the local pack. Or the map pack. Three names, one thing.

Each listing carries a business name. A star rating and a review count. Category, opening hours, distance from wherever the search happened. Then buttons for directions and calls.

None of that comes from your website’s ranking. It comes from your Google Business Profile. A separate index. Different signals feeding it.

Underneath the block, ordinary organic results begin. Blue links, ranked by the process everybody already knows.

A business can hold a 3-pack slot while appearing nowhere in the organic ten. That happens all the time in Calgary SEO work. The reverse happens just as often.

The Three Is a Display Limit, Not a Ranking Tier

Google used to show seven listings in that block. The seven-pack. It shrank to three during 2015.

The ranking system did not shrink. Only the box did. Phones had taken over by then, and seven listings swallowed an entire screen.

Proof sits one tap away. Press the link under the 3-pack that opens more places. A longer list appears. Position four is sitting right there. So is position twelve.

The list never stopped at three, then. Only the page did.

That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should.

The Objection: Call It What You Like, I Want a Slot

Owners say the same thing within five seconds. Fine, it is a display cutoff. I still want one of the three slots. What does new vocabulary change?

Still, that objection is the argument.

A tier is something you qualify for. Meet the standard, receive the badge. A truncation works differently. Your position is decided by whoever else is standing near you.

So there is no checklist that puts a business in the 3-pack. There is only outranking whichever business currently sits third. Add a stronger competitor two blocks over and your unchanged profile drops out.

Nothing went wrong on your end. The line just moved.

Owners take that personally. Understandably so. A dropped 3-pack slot feels like a penalty, when it is usually somebody else finally collecting reviews.

Your 3-Pack and Your Customer’s 3-Pack Are Different Results

Distance feeds the ranking. Change the searcher’s location and that input changes with it.

Stand in Inglewood and search for a dentist. Drive to Airdrie. Search again. Different three listings, same query, same afternoon.

Which makes “we are in the 3-pack” an unfinished sentence. In the 3-pack where, exactly?

Rank trackers report one sample point. Usually a city centroid. Your customers are not standing on a centroid. They are at home, or in a parking lot four suburbs away.

Two businesses can both be telling the truth about holding a 3-pack slot for the same keyword. Neither one is lying. They are describing different maps.

Test it on your own business. Open Google Maps from two neighbourhoods you actually serve. Search your main category from each. Write down who appears. Most owners find their own listing in one result and not the other.

What the Ranking List Behind the 3-Pack Is Sorted By

Google names three factors publicly. How closely you match the query. Then how far away you are. Prominence covers how well known your business is.

Only one of those keeps growing. Reviews accumulate. Mentions and links from local sources accumulate.

Distance is fixed the day you sign a lease. Relevance is mostly category selection plus the words on your site, which is careful keyword research rather than ongoing labour.

Prominence is where months of work go. That is also why nobody can promise you a slot by Friday.

Fourth Place Pays Nothing

Here is the practical cost of a hard cutoff.

Fourth is not a near miss. On a phone screen, fourth is invisible until somebody clicks to expand the list. Almost nobody does.

Rank three and rank four differ by one position. The visibility between them differs by nearly everything.

Do not take that on faith. Open the performance report inside your Google Business Profile. Compare a month when you held a local pack slot against a month when you did not. Calls, direction requests, profile views. The shape of that gap is the whole argument.

Which is also why a stalled 3-pack effort feels so strange. Weeks of profile work, no visible change, then a jump. Nothing improved gradually because nothing about the display is gradual.

Where the 3-Pack Argument Stops

Plenty of searches show no local pack at all. Informational queries mostly skip it. So the 3-pack cannot be the entire local plan.

A slot is also not a sale. Three listings appear. One of them gets chosen. Reviews usually decide which one. Your rating keeps working after the ranking finishes.

Google has run paid placements around and inside that area for some service categories too. An organic slot is not automatically the first thing on screen. Some businesses run Google Ads alongside the map work for that reason, especially while prominence is still building.

And a strong 3-pack presence sitting on top of four thin website pages tends to stall. Both halves of local SEO carry weight.

How SEO Company To-The-TOP! Reads the Map in Calgary

We have been doing local SEO here since 2007. One specialist handles the work, so nothing gets passed to a junior.

Map checks run from several points across a service area rather than one downtown pin. That is the only way to see the pattern. A business can lead the 3-pack across half a city and vanish across the other half.

Profile, reviews, citations, site content. White Hat methods only. Position reporting arrives monthly, and it shows movement instead of a single flattering screenshot.

Three to six months before meaningful movement is the realistic range for a competitive Calgary category. Newer profiles sit at the longer end. A website audit usually explains why a profile is stuck faster than another round of profile edits does.

Common Questions About the Local SEO 3-Pack

What is a local SEO 3-pack?

Three business listings shown with a map above the organic results for local searches. The listings come from Google Business Profile data rather than from website rankings. Local pack and map pack refer to the same block.

Why does Google only show three results?

Screen space. Google reduced the block from seven listings to three in 2015, once mobile search overtook desktop. The underlying ranking list is far longer than three, and tapping to expand the results reveals the rest of it.

How do I get my business into the 3-pack?

Claim and complete the Google Business Profile first. Pick the most specific primary category. Then build reviews steadily and keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere online. Distance you cannot change, so prominence is where the effort goes.

Does the 3-pack look the same for everyone?

No. Results shift with the searcher’s location, so two customers in different neighbourhoods often see two different sets of three listings. Any report claiming a single 3-pack position is describing one measurement point.

Is the 3-pack more valuable than ranking first organically?

For most local service queries it sits higher on the page, which usually means more calls. Both matter, though. Businesses holding a map slot with a weak website tend to lose the visitors who read before they phone.
