Do You Need Digital Marketing or SEO Service?

SEO sits inside digital marketing. One is a category. The other is a member of it. So the question asks whether you want the box or one thing out of the box. That is the standard answer. It is correct. This site covers it properly elsewhere, so it will not get repeated here.

What it leaves out is the interesting part. You are standing in front of a decision. Somebody is about to make it for you. Then you pay for it without ever seeing a price.

Nothing here compares the two. No verdict on which is better, no pricing, no checklist for choosing an agency. All of it lives on other pages.

Nobody Has Ever Been Sent Digital Marketing

Nobody Has Ever Been Sent Digital Marketing

Open the last proposal that landed in your inbox. Then read past the introduction.

What you find is a list. Some work on your website. A number of articles. Perhaps a Google Ads budget, some posts, an email or two a month. Nearly every line names a specific thing somebody will do.

Now hunt for the line that says digital marketing. It is not there. Digital marketing is the word at the top of the page. A heading rather than a deliverable.

None of that is a complaint. A category needs a name. Only notice what follows. You cannot buy digital marketing. What you can buy is the things underneath it. One at a time. Somebody has already chosen which ones. One of them is bought by the click, which raises whether SEO is paid media.

The Proposal Already Answered Your Question

The Proposal Already Answered Your Question

Read that list again. Slowly.

The question you typed into Google was which channel your money should go into. Then look at what you are holding. Four channels named, in an order, with hours against each. Somebody answered your question before you asked it.

That answer is the whole engagement. Everything downstream follows. Get it wrong and every hour spent afterwards is spent well, on the wrong thing. Yet the answer arrived as page one. As background. The part you skim to reach the numbers.

The One Line on the Invoice That Carries No Price

The One Line on the Invoice That Carries No Price

Read the numbers next. Each attaches to something a person will do.

Hours are priced. Ad spend is priced. Articles by the article, links by the campaign, reporting by the month. All of it gets argued about.

Now hunt for a line covering the decision itself. Somebody decided that SEO was the right route for this business. That line is not on there.

So the most consequential decision in the document is the one decision nobody put a number on. And an item carrying no number reads as a preamble. People argue about what they are charged for. Nothing invites an argument about the line carrying no charge.

Somebody Will Point at the Strategy Line

Somebody Will Point at the Strategy Line

Plenty of proposals carry one. Discovery, a paid audit phase, priced properly. Fair enough.

Only read where it sits. It arrives after the channels are named. Whatever it works out, it works out inside them.

So the decision does get a price sometimes. Never the decision you came here to make.

The Half of the Decision You Are Best Placed to Make

The Half of the Decision You Are Best Placed to Make

Here is what makes it strange. Nobody has to be a genius to decide this.

Which channel deserves your money turns on two facts. What customers do when they need what you sell. Then how they found you the last several times somebody hired you.

Nobody in any agency holds the second one. Call tracking can start collecting it tomorrow, which helps you next year. Meanwhile those conversations already happened. You were in every one of them.

So the part of the service you cannot audit is the part you were best placed to settle. Meanwhile you outsourced the decision by opening a digital marketing proposal.

Buy the Judgment. Then Buy the Hands.

Buy the Judgment. Then Buy the Hands.

None of which makes the judgment worthless. Rather the opposite, since it is the most valuable thing in the document. Which is the argument for separating it from the rest.

Somebody who has watched a great many businesses in your position brings something real. They know which trades live on search and which never touch it. Also what a market looks like when nobody is typing anything. Worth paying for.

Pay for it on its own. A short engagement, ending in a sentence. Never a twelve-month retainer that begins by assuming the sentence.

Buy the hands afterward. An SEO service, or somebody to run the ads. Perhaps both, depending on what the sentence said. Two purchases, in an order. Which is rarely the order digital marketing gets sold in.

Where the Digital Marketing Argument Stops

Where the Digital Marketing Argument Stops

Plenty of businesses genuinely need several channels at once. Holding them together is much of what digital marketing is for. That coordination is real work, and it deserves paying for.

Some of those proposals contain excellent judgment, naming things nobody could have guessed about your business. Read it. Then pay it gladly.

Where it goes wrong is quieter. A list arrives. Nobody can say what produced it. Then everybody argues about the hourly rate. Somewhere in that argument sits the older question of SEO as a marketing channel. Then whether SEO is part of digital marketing, which nobody in the meeting stops to settle.

Read the Top of the Page, Not the Middle

Read the Top of the Page, Not the Middle

Try this on the proposal you are holding.

Ignore the prices for a moment. Go looking for the sentence explaining why these channels and not others. Then ask one thing of it. Could this have been written about another business?

Maybe it could not. It names your customers, your margins, the campaign you tried once that went nowhere. Then somebody thought hard about you. And the most valuable thing in that document carries no price. Sign.

Or maybe the sentence is missing. In which case the decision is not hidden in the document. Rather it is absent from the transaction. Nobody made it. The list you are reading is the list everybody gets.

No statistic about other companies settles which of those you are looking at. Yours is on the desk in front of you.

Working With SEO Company To-The-TOP!

Working With SEO Company To-The-TOP!

That proposal turns up often enough at SEO Company To-The-TOP!. A business owner behind it, wanting to know whether the SEO line is worth keeping. The first useful hour rarely goes on the line items. It goes on the question underneath.

Sometimes the answer is that search is where your customers live. Then there is a great deal to do, and businesses across Calgary tend to find that it is. Sometimes they are not searching yet. Then a Google Ads campaign buys the traffic while the slower work builds. Occasionally nothing is searching for you, and we say so.

To-The-TOP! has been doing this since 2007. Solo practitioner. So whoever reads your proposal is whoever does the work afterward. Any search engine optimization built on content nobody wanted is expensive in a way no invoice shows. The portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached. No guarantees. Rankings move over three to six months, sometimes longer.

Common Questions About Digital Marketing and SEO Service

Is SEO part of digital marketing?

Yes. SEO is one of the things the category contains, alongside paid advertising, social and email. That taxonomy is settled, and covered elsewhere. Knowing it does not tell you what to buy.

Should a small business buy digital marketing or just SEO?

The word small settles nothing here. What settles it is whether people are already searching for what you sell. Where they are, buying an SEO service directly is the shorter path. Should they not be, somebody needs to decide that before a retainer starts, rather than nine months into one.

How do I know which channel my customers use?

Ask them. Not a survey. The last ten people who paid you, one question each. That answer costs nothing. No tool sells it either.

Is a digital marketing retainer worth it?

It can be, provided somebody is genuinely deciding things inside it. A retainer quietly running the same four channels every month, whatever the numbers do, has stopped being a decision. It is a subscription.

Can one company do both well?

Plenty can. The question is not about competence, though. It is about whether the company deciding which channel you need is the same company being paid to run it. That arrangement is common and legal. Still worth noticing before you sign anything.
