How to Integrate SEO

Integrating SEO usually arrives as one more person in one more meeting. The specialist joins the planning call. A checklist grows a new row. Reporting starts landing every month. That is the whole method, and on the big things it works.

Then an ordinary week happens underneath it.

Somebody creates a page on a Tuesday afternoon. They type an address into a box, mostly because the box will not close until they do. Nobody scheduled that moment. The address is still sitting there four years later.

What People Mean by Integrating SEO

What People Mean by Integrating SEO

Three moves, usually. Somebody who understands search joins the room where the website gets planned. A quarterly review appears. Monthly numbers start arriving in an inbox.

Each of those aims at something carrying a name and a date. A redesign has both. So does a migration.

Nothing is wrong with any of it. Yet the choices that decide whether your pages can be found happen somewhere else. They happen in seconds, between two other jobs, on a keyboard nobody put on the calendar.

Two Other Questions Wearing the Same Words

The phrase does double duty. Sometimes it means fitting an outside consultant alongside staff you already employ. That is a real problem about access and sign-off. Answered elsewhere, and answered well.

Other times it means software. Plugging a tool into your stack, or wiring an API into the build. Also real. Still, a different room entirely.

What remains is the version most people are asking about without quite saying so. How does search engine optimization stop being something you do to a website once the website already exists?

Nobody Called a Meeting to Name That URL

Nobody Called a Meeting to Name That URL

Open any page you published last year. Read its address.

Somebody chose that. They chose it while doing something else, in the gap between finishing the copy and hitting publish. It took seconds, since nothing in the building told them it mattered.

That address will outlive the campaign it was built for. It will outlive the person who typed it. Meanwhile the redesign everybody met about six times got torn out after three years.

Nothing went wrong there. Nobody broke a rule. The decision simply sat beneath the resolution of anything your company calls a process.

Four People Did SEO Before Lunch

Four People Did SEO Before Lunch

A writer picked a headline for the new page. That headline became the title tag.

A designer decided the customer quote would look better as an image. Those words then left the content of the page.

A developer chose where the page would live. That became the URL.

Someone at the front desk answered the same question for the fourth time this month. Nobody wrote the answer down anywhere.

None of those four would tell you they did any SEO. Not one has it in a job title. Still, between them they settled the title. The address. Whether the words on that page were words at all. Which is the quiet answer to whether SEO is part of web development.

A Decision Too Small for the Calendar

A Decision Too Small for the Calendar

Process reaches things with names. A project has a name. So does a sprint. The instant somebody names a file has nothing of the kind.

A choice that takes less time than opening the calendar will never appear on it.

So the integration effort floats above the work, doing real things, at the wrong altitude. Nobody here is lazy. The plan simply cannot see that far down.

That is also why hiring matters more than organizing. Somebody who knows what an address is worth spends those seconds well without being asked twice. Anybody who does not will spend them the same way either way, and no meeting ever changes it.

Where Integrating SEO Genuinely Works

Where Integrating SEO Genuinely Works

Big, named, expensive things. Migrations. Redesigns. A new section of the site, planned months out. Those carry dates. A meeting reaches them easily. That is exactly what they need.

Do not skip it. The room is the one place where somebody who knows the cost stands next to somebody about to decide.

Run an SEO audit too. It finds the redirect that broke. The tag somebody deleted. An internal link pointing at nothing. None of that is theatre.

Still, an audit arrives after the decision. Being there for the decision is a different job. Redesigns are also where og in SEO quietly gets decided.

Look at the Last Page You Published

Look at the Last Page You Published

Open it. Read the URL, then read the title.

Now work out who chose them, and what else that person was doing at the time.

Maybe a rule chose them. Some websites build addresses automatically out of the headline, and somebody set that rule up once, years ago. Then your answer is a good one already. The integration you are asking about happened before you asked.

Maybe a person chose them on the way to something else. Then you have found where this work actually lives, and it is nowhere near the meeting.

No statistic about other companies would tell you who typed that line. So we will not offer one.

Integrate SEO by Removing the Decision

Integrate SEO by Removing the Decision

You cannot schedule a decision that small. Instead you can delete it.

Settle the URL pattern once, then write it down where the next person will find it. Agree what a page title has to contain before anybody writes another one. Name the questions that get answered on the site rather than over the phone.

Those answers come out of keyword research, which is why the research belongs before the building rather than after it.

Somebody who knows still has to write that answer. Just the once, though. Not every Tuesday, and never in a meeting.

Nobody at the keyboard has a decision left to make. There is nothing there to get wrong.

The goal was never to get everybody thinking about SEO. It is to make sure nobody has to. Same with the rule for pagination, written down once and never argued again.

What We Set Up for Calgary Clients

What We Set Up for Calgary Clients

SEO Company To-The-TOP! has worked this way since 2007. We do not sit in your Monday standup. Instead we hand over the standing answers, then stay reachable on the day something turns up that none of them cover.

One specialist does the work here. No junior handoffs, so the person who wrote your URL rule is the person you email about it.

Most of our Calgary SEO clients ask how fast this shows up. Three to six months, typically, before movement means anything. The same holds when we run Google Ads alongside it, though ads answer faster and cost more while they run.

Naming that page gave nobody a reason to remember doing it. Still worth finding out who did.

Common Questions About Integrating SEO

What does it mean to integrate SEO?

Practically, it means deciding a handful of small questions once, in advance, so nobody has to decide them again in a hurry. Everything else called integration is scheduling.

Who should own search inside a small business?

Whoever names the pages. That is rarely the person with marketing in their title, which is the whole difficulty in one sentence.

Do I still need to integrate SEO after hiring an agency?

Yes, though less of it. An agency will not be at your team’s shoulder the moment somebody types an address. Standing answers can.

Is an SEO audit the same as integrating SEO?

No. An audit reads decisions already made. Integration is about the seconds before they get made, which is not what an audit is for.

How long before integrating SEO shows results?

No ranking moves the week you agree on a URL pattern. Six months of pages built on it look very different from six months of pages built without one.
