How to Learn SEO on Reddit

Ask r/SEO how to learn SEO and you get a thread full of answers. Most of them contradict each other. That looks like a problem with Reddit.

It is the reason to be there. Nobody learns SEO from a thread. Threads are too short for that. Yet Reddit holds one thing no course sells and no documentation prints. It shows you which parts of SEO are still argued over. Every other source flattens that away.

The Threads Cost Nothing and the Top Comment Is the Worst Part

Take the mechanical answer first. Most volume sits in r/SEO. Then r/bigseo, quieter and older. Crawling and indexing questions get better replies over in r/TechSEO.

Reddit’s own search box is poor. So type your question into Google instead, then add the operator on the end

site:reddit.com

Google surfaces those threads better than the site itself does.

That is the whole setup. Four minutes. Everything below is about what to do once a thread is open. Reading one the obvious way teaches you the wrong things.

Upvotes Measure Agreement Among Beginners

Look at who fills an SEO subreddit. Mostly people learning SEO. That is the point of the place.

So a vote count records how many learners found a comment plausible. Plausible is not correct. Tidy, confident, familiar-sounding answers collect votes quickly. A correct answer that needs three caveats does not. You are reading a popularity result from a room with your exact knowledge gap.

Top comments still have a use. Read them as a record of what beginners believe this year.

What a Thread Holds That Documentation Never Will

Google’s documentation gets written to be correct. So it stops where certainty stops. It never prints the sentence “we will not tell you this.” A paid course behaves the same way for a different reason. One author. A single voice. The same confidence level stretched over every claim in the syllabus.

Reddit cannot manage that. Two people who both clearly run sites will disagree in public, under the same question, with their reasoning attached.

Which means the fight is the payload. Not the verdict.

Two Questions, Two Shapes of Thread

Watch the shape rather than the content. Ask whether a broken internal link matters and the thread converges. Six replies. No argument. Mild irritation that you asked at all.

Then ask how long a site takes to recover after a core update. That thread splits open. Three months, says one reply. Never, says another. Somebody else explains that recovery is the wrong word for it.

Same subreddit. Posted the same day. Completely different behaviour.

The first thread handed you a fact already sitting in the documentation. Thread two handed you something the documentation will not say. Nobody knows. That is worth more, since it happens to be the question you were about to burn a quarter on.

So read for convergence and divergence. Not for answers. A tight thread means go do the thing. Messy threads mean run your own test and stop reading.

Somebody Will Say the Contradictions Make Reddit Useless

That objection arrives fast. SEO advice online contradicts itself. A beginner cannot referee it. Go read the primary documentation instead.

Half right. Read the documentation. Then notice what the objection quietly assumes. It treats a contested claim as worthless. In fact a contested claim is doing real work for you. It says nobody has settled this, which says do not spend a month on it.

Silence in the Documentation Is Not Consensus

Here is the gap documentation leaves behind. It says nothing about most of what practitioners fight over. A beginner reads that silence two ways and cannot tell them apart. Either the thing does not matter. Or Google will not comment on it.

Reddit separates those. Where practitioners agree without a fight, treat it as ground and move on. A page has to be crawlable. Titles have to be unique. Nobody argues about a redirect resolving in one hop either.

Where they fight, every confident answer is a guess. Including the one you paid for.

Read the Replies Nobody Upvoted

Now the practical change. Sort the comments by controversial. Then read downward.

A reply sitting at two votes under a top comment is often the person who tested the claim and got something else. Check what they attached. A specific site. The actual query. One number they watched move over six weeks.

Assertions with nothing attached cost nothing to make. Discount those at every vote level, top comment included.

Check the Year on the Argument

Reddit threads rank in Google for years. So the argument you landed on may already be finished. Rendering was genuinely contested once. Mobile-first indexing too. Both got resolved. The threads never updated.

Look at the date before treating a disagreement as live. A 2018 fight proves nothing about 2026. Only that people once cared.

Reddit Skews Toward Whatever Broke

One distortion is worth carrying with you. People post when something goes wrong. Traffic dropped. A page fell out of the index. Then a client walked.

Nobody starts a thread about the month their SEO behaved as expected. So what you read is accurate about failure and useless about normal. Spend a year in there and you will overestimate how often sites get penalised. You will also underestimate how boring most SEO work actually is.

Keep a List of What Reddit Cannot Agree On

Here is something to do with all of it. Open a note. Every time a thread splits, write the claim down in one line.

A month of that gets you maybe fifteen lines. That list beats any course outline you could buy. Every line on it marks a place where your own guessing has company.

Then rank the list by what being wrong would cost you. Recovery timelines sit near the top for most sites. Whether to nofollow a footer link sits near the bottom. Work downward from the expensive end.

Testing beats reading from there. You have a shortlist of live questions and a site to try them on. That is the closest thing to a curriculum Reddit will ever hand you.

Where Learning SEO on Reddit Stops

The method has one hard ceiling. You cannot tell who you are reading. Nine years of results and nine weeks of reading type identically on Reddit.

Anonymity is what makes the disagreement visible in the first place. It is also the bill. So you learn which claims are contested. You never learn which practitioner to believe.

That gap closes exactly one way. Test the contested claim on a site you control.

Learning SEO Around a Calgary Business

Most owners do not have the year this takes. That is the ordinary situation across the Calgary SEO work I do. Reading threads at night while running a company is a slow route into a slow discipline.

So split the job. Learn enough to judge the work. Hand the execution over. Two evenings in r/SEO will not teach you technical auditing, though they teach enough vocabulary to ask a specialist a hard question. A proper SEO audit answers what no thread can, since it looks at your pages rather than someone else’s. The same goes for keyword research on your own market. Some owners need traffic before that learning curve pays off. Paid search runs on a shorter clock. So plenty of them add Google Ads management while the SEO settles in. SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been at this since 2007. At To-The-TOP! the useful conversations start with an owner who has read a little.

Common Questions About Learning SEO on Reddit

Is Reddit a good place to learn SEO?

Not as a curriculum. It is the strongest free source for something else. Reddit shows which pieces of SEO advice practitioners still argue about. That tells you where to stop reading and start testing.

Which SEO subreddit should I read first?

Volume lives in r/SEO. Larger sites get discussed in r/bigseo. Then r/TechSEO once crawling and indexing questions matter to you. Find the threads through Google rather than Reddit’s search.

Can I trust the top comment on an SEO thread?

Treat it as what most learners in that subreddit find believable. That is genuinely useful information. It is not a correctness ranking, since the voters largely share your knowledge gap.

Do I still need Google’s documentation if I read Reddit?

Yes, and in that order. Documentation for what is settled. Reddit for what is not. The docs will never tell you which of their own omissions are deliberate.

Should I ask my own question or just read?

Read fifty threads first. Most beginner questions already have answers sitting there. A repeat gets short replies. Ask something specific about a result you can describe and you get real ones.
