How to Use Generative AI for SEO

A prompt returned nine hundred words of usable draft in under a minute. Checking that draft ate the rest of the afternoon.

That trade is the entire subject. Generation got fast. Verification never did. Every practical question about generative AI for SEO folds back into the gap between those two speeds.

So the useful question is not which tasks a model can handle. It handles most of them. The question is which ones you can afford to check.

Generative Is the Part That Invents

Worth separating from the rest of the AI already sitting in your stack.

SEO software has carried machine learning inside it for years. Difficulty scores. Volume estimates. Cluster grouping. Crawl prioritization. Every one of those reports on data that exists somewhere already. Bad output still traces back to a source you can open and read.

Generative AI works differently. It manufactures the sentence. Nothing sits underneath. No row, no crawl, no log file. The output reads identically whether the fact beneath it is real or invented.

That property sets the check price. You are not confirming a lookup. What sits in front of you is a claim with no origin.

Name the Check Before the Prompt Goes Anywhere

One rule covers the whole workflow.

Say out loud what you would look at to know the answer is right. Estimate how long that looking takes. Faster than doing the task yourself? Send the prompt. Slower? Then you are not delegating anything. You are gambling and filing it under efficiency.

Almost nobody runs that step. People estimate generation time instead. Generation time is the one number that never matters, because it is always close to zero.

Where the Check Costs Almost Nothing

Some tasks pass that test without argument.

Forty title tags built from a keyword list. Two minutes to scan them. The wrong ones announce themselves on sight.

Schema markup. Paste it into a validator. It parses or it fails.

A redirect map built from an old URL list. Diff the result against the list you supplied. Every line has a partner or it does not.

Alt text for images you can see. Look at the picture.

Turning a crawl export into a sorted priority list. Ground truth already sits in the file you handed over.

Notice the shared property. In each case the correct answer lives outside the model, and you can reach it in seconds. That is the whole qualification. Nothing about the task being simple.

Where the Check Costs More Than the Work

Same test. Opposite result.

A full article on a subject you do not know well. Checking it means learning the subject. Learning the subject was the expensive part all along. Generation saved you nothing and cost you an afternoon.

Anything about recent algorithm behaviour. Training data stops at a cutoff. What comes out still reads current and certain.

Named product capabilities. A sentence claiming Search Console does something specific has to be verified inside the product. That hunt usually runs longer than writing the line from memory would have.

Statistics. A generated number arrives without a citation. Sourcing it afterwards costs more than finding a real figure did.

Competitor analysis. The model never saw the competitor site.

Those are the exact tasks people reach for first. Sit with that pattern for a second. Reach tracks check price, and it tracks it in the wrong direction.

The Same Task Has a Different Price for You

Check price is not a property of the task alone. It moves with whoever is doing the checking.

Hand a generated paragraph about link building to somebody who has run link campaigns since 2007. They spot the wrong claim on the first read. Hand the identical paragraph to somebody six months into the field. They cannot check it at any speed, because checking requires the knowledge the paragraph was meant to supply.

Which produces an awkward result. Generative AI pays off most for the person who needed it least.

That is not an argument against using it. It is an argument for keeping the tool inside your own competence. Push it outward from what you already know. The moment output lands in territory you cannot evaluate, speed stops being a benefit.

Somebody Is About to Say They Never Check It

Fair enough. Plenty of pages went live unread and nothing visibly broke.

Here is why that confirms the rule instead of denting it. Skipping a check does not delete the check. It defers it. The bill lands later, when a client reads a wrong sentence about their own industry. Or a competitor quotes your error back at you in a pitch. Maybe a page underperforms and nobody can name which part failed.

Deferred checks also compound badly. You never get to recheck the single bad page. The whole batch goes back through, because you no longer know which page carries the problem. Forty pages at full reading speed, months on, with no memory of what you were thinking at the time. The price went up while you waited.

So the check is not optional. Only its timing and its cost sit under your control. Pick tasks where it stays small.

Generative AI for SEO Is Not Generative SEO

Two different subjects share a word, which causes real confusion.

Generative SEO means getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers. That concerns your visibility on those platforms. This page runs the other direction. Using the tools to produce the work.

The rule crosses over intact, though. Content written to earn citations still needs its facts checked before publication.

How To-The-TOP! Uses Generative AI

Straight answer, since clients ask.

The tools live in the drafting and sorting stages. Never the fact stages. Ideation for keyword research runs through a model. Then every keyword gets validated against real volume data before it reaches a plan. A crawl summary from a site audit gets generated. The diagnosis does not. Batches of Google Ads copy variants come out of a model. Every line gets read before anything goes live. Ad text is short enough to check quickly.

Nineteen years of Calgary SEO work sits behind the judgment calls. SEO Company To-The-TOP! did not delegate that part, and there is no version of the tooling that would make delegating it sensible.

That leaves an open question worth asking your own provider. Which stages do they run a model through, and what do they check afterwards?

Common Questions About Using Generative AI for SEO

Can generative AI write content that ranks?

Yes, when somebody who knows the subject edits it. Ranking follows relevance and depth. A model supplies neither on its own. It supplies structure and speed.

Which SEO tasks should never go to a generative model?

Anything where the output is a claim you cannot verify faster than you could produce it. Statistics without sources. Recent algorithm behaviour. Current product features. Competitor specifics.

Does Google penalize generative AI content?

Google’s stated position targets low-quality content produced for search engines rather than readers. Production method is not the criterion. Unchecked generative output tends to be low quality, which is how the two get conflated.

Is a better prompt the answer to the accuracy problem?

Prompting improves structure and tone reliably. It does not give the model access to facts it never held. A confident wrong answer from a good prompt still costs the same to check.

How do I check a generated statistic quickly?

You mostly cannot, and that is the point. Search the claim. No primary source in two minutes means cut the sentence rather than soften it.

What about the AI features built into my SEO tools?

Read whether the feature reports or invents. Reporting features sit on your own crawl data and check fast. Generative features inside the same dashboard carry the same price as any other model.
