Ninety days. 294 keywords. 143 Alberta and British Columbia municipalities, queried separately from inside each town’s own geography. That is the dataset behind this study. It answers a question most local business owners put to their marketing person at some point. How much do search rankings actually move?
The short answer surprised us. Most days, nothing moves. On the days something moves, it moves a long way.
Short answer. Eight of twelve Calgary-serving agencies publish a price somewhere on their own site. The published monthly figures run from $750 to $30,000 and up. Median entry retainer: $1,250. Seven of the eight entry points sit at or below $2,500 a month. Only two agencies print a Google Ads management fee at all.
Every number below was read off a live page on 18 August 2026. Nothing was quoted to us, guessed at, or averaged in from a national blog post.
See what Google Ads would cost for your business in any city across Canada and the United States. Enter your business type and location for a live estimate built on real Google Ads data, with three package options. The numbers are estimates, not quotes; a short call turns them into a real plan.
Content SEO is the work of writing and structuring pages so search engines can rank them and real people actually want to read them. That is the short version. I have been working as a Calgary SEO expert for local businesses since 2007. The longer version is what most guides skip.
Here is the pattern I see on nearly every new client site. Plenty of pages. Almost none of them written for a search anyone performs. The owner paid good money for a polished, professional-looking website. Brochure copy fills every page. Meanwhile the analytics show a flat line where organic traffic should be. Nothing wrong with the design. The problem sits in the words. They were chosen for the boardroom instead of the search box.
Gotch SEO Academy does not exist under that name anymore. Nathan Gotch retired the brand. The course became Rankability Academy first. Then it became Search OS in 2025. Anyone searching for the old name gets redirected straight to the new one, pricing included.
That history matters here. The old course cost roughly $9,000 to $11,000, paid once for lifetime access. Nothing about the current version works that way. It runs on a monthly subscription instead. Three tiers. Prices start far lower than the old one-time fee ever did.
First client who pushed back on investing in SEO ran a home services company in southeast Calgary. Good operator. Solid reviews. Their competitor, a newer business with a smaller crew, ranked above them for every search that mattered in the city. That competitor was not better at the work. They were just easier to find.
Fourteen months of SEO work reversed that gap. Not overnight. Consistently, and in the right direction.
Ask an agency how it integrates SEO and paid media. You will hear about a shared keyword list. One dashboard. A weekly sync between the two people running each channel.
All of that is real work. None of it is the integration.
Two PPC agency proposals sit on the desk. Twelve pages each. Both are packed with terms you would have to go look up before you could argue with a single line.
So the standard advice says go look them up. Learn enough of the vocabulary to hold your own in the next meeting. That advice sends a business owner into a semester of study just to buy a service.
Control is the question we get most from businesses thinking about Google Ads. Not clicks, not cost, not competition. Control. Does an advertiser decide what happens, or does Google?
More than most expect. Spend caps are hard limits. Keywords are chosen by the advertiser. Your ad copy is written by your team. Pausing your ads takes seconds. There is no lock-in, no contract, no minimum spend requirement.
