What Is Article Marketing in SEO?
Article marketing means writing an article and handing it to a website you do not own. A link comes back the other way. That is the whole definition, and it takes about ten seconds.
Everything written on the subject argues about that link. Whether it still counts for anything. Also whether it ever did.
Two things move in that trade. Only one of them ever gets discussed.

Two Things Move in That Trade
The link travels toward you. Meanwhile the article travels away, and it does not come back.
Think about what you actually built. A title. An address on somebody else’s domain. Words a stranger will read next spring without ever wondering who did the writing. That is a page. It behaves like every other page on the internet.
Now think about what arrived. One line of HTML. Three words of anchor text, maybe four.
A link is a line. An article is a page. Nobody in this whole argument has ever weighed the two against each other. Nobody counts the hours of SEO outreach it took to place it either.

What This Page Leaves Alone
Article marketing began with directories no searcher ever read. Some update ended that era. Which one, and how, is a story told properly elsewhere on this site.
Pitching a publication is its own craft. So is finding one worth pitching. Both belong to our guest posting article, and neither shows up below.
Parasite SEO is a different arrangement entirely. There the page is yours and the domain is theirs. Here the page is theirs too.
Then there is the safety question. Whether the link carries a nofollow attribute. Money may have changed hands too. Those questions live with white hat and black hat SEO. Nothing below is a verdict on the tactic. The bigger claim, that SEO is really content marketing, sits elsewhere too.

Count the Words in the Article. Now Count the Words in the Link.
Open the last article you placed on somebody else’s website. Read your own writing through once. Then count the words.
Go back and find your link sitting inside it. Count those words too.
You now have two numbers. One of them is large. The other one is the number pointing home.
Maybe you have never placed an article anywhere. Then open the last thing you published on your own website and ask who else would have been glad to run it. Somebody would have. That is the same finding, arriving from the other direction.
No number out of somebody else’s blog would tell you a thing about your own two. So we will not offer one.

Only One of Them Has a Future
Here is what the publisher can do tomorrow morning. Rewrite your headline. Add three hundred words to the middle. Move the piece into their navigation. Send it to a mailing list of people who have never heard of you. Their page can go on collecting search traffic for questions you never had in mind.
Nobody can do any of that to your link. It was finished the day it went up.
The page keeps changing. Meanwhile the line stays exactly as long as it was, saying exactly what it said.
That asymmetry is the entire subject. Somehow it is also the part nobody mentions.

Nobody Was Robbed
None of this makes the publisher a villain. They ran your article because it was good. No editor prints weak content as a favour.
You wanted a link. So you got one, and it was a real one. Both sides walked away holding what they came for.
An article somebody agreed to publish is an article that was worth publishing. Take the compliment.
The arrangement needs no defending at all. It only needs pricing, and almost nobody prices it.

When Handing an Article Over Costs You Nothing
Some articles could never have worked on your own website.
You wrote a piece for an audience you do not have. Perhaps it speaks to a trade you serve but do not belong to. Or its subject sits well outside anything you sell. Publish that on your own site and it sits there, quietly wrong about who your readers are.
You had nowhere to put it. Then handing it over costs you nothing you could have spent. This is the good trade, and it is more common than the sceptics allow.
Plenty of solid Calgary SEO work looks exactly like this. The same logic runs underneath Google Ads placement, where you rent an audience you were never going to build.

When It Costs You the Page You Needed
Now turn it around.
You had the audience. The subject was yours. Customers ask that question every week on the phone. So you answered it beautifully, once, on a domain that will never send you anybody.
That article was an asset. You traded it for a line of HTML.
Regret never attaches to the link. Instead it attaches to the article. It arrives later, when somebody asks why you have no page on the one topic you know cold.
The expensive ones are always the good ones. Nothing else is ever worth giving away.

What We Tell Calgary Clients
SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing this work since 2007, and the rule we use is short. Publish it yourself first. Give away only what your own website could not have used.
Most of what a small business knows belongs on its own SEO services pages, under its own name. Some of it does not. Sorting one pile from the other takes an afternoon and it is worth the afternoon.
Nothing here moves fast. Three to six months before any of it shows up in a report. That holds whether the words landed on your domain or somebody else’s. So it goes for website promotion generally, and no amount of placement shortens it.
Nothing ranks the week you place an article. Start from what people actually search for, using keyword research, rather than from a list of publications willing to have you. The question was never who will publish this. It was always whether you should have kept it.
Somebody is reading one of your articles right now, on a website you do not own. That was the arrangement. Still worth knowing which article it was. Different job from submitting articles to directories, which was never really marketing.
Common Questions About Article Marketing
Is article marketing dead?
The directory version is long gone. What lies underneath it never went anywhere, because writers still hand articles to publications in exchange for a link and a byline. Only the goods improved on both sides.
Is article marketing the same as guest posting?
Close enough that arguing the difference wastes an afternoon. Guest posting usually means a real publication with a real editor. Article marketing is the older, broader name for the same exchange.
Who owns an article once somebody else publishes it?
Read the agreement, because a publication often takes some form of ownership, sometimes all of it. Your name stays on the piece. The page does not.
Does article marketing still build backlinks?
Yes. A link from a page an editor chose to publish is one you earned rather than bought. That kind tends to hold up. The article you gave away to get it is the part worth thinking harder about.
Should a small business bother with article marketing?
Only after its own website holds everything it knows. Give away the overflow, never the core.
