What Is Image Sharing in SEO?
Image sharing means putting your pictures on somebody else’s website. A photo platform, a pinboard site, whatever image directory somebody recommended. Somewhere busy, with a field beside the upload for your address.
Whether links from those places carry any SEO weight is settled, and this site answers it under social bookmarking. So is which platforms deserve your Tuesday. None of it gets repeated here.
There is a smaller question underneath it. Hardly anybody asks that one. What did you hand over?
Everything Else You Submit Carries Its Own Address
Line up the other things a business submits elsewhere for SEO reasons.
An article goes out with your link inside a sentence, in the middle of the writing. A directory listing is odder, since the address is most of what got submitted. Then a bookmark, which is a link and little else.
Every one has your address built into the thing itself. Pull the item out of the platform and the address comes with it. Copy the paragraph and the link comes inside it.
The address was part of the object from the start.
That arrangement is so ordinary nobody notices it.
An Image Carries Nothing at All
Open the file you were about to upload. There is a picture inside it. Nothing else a reader meets.
No sentence. Not an address either. Nothing anybody could follow.
Somebody will point at the metadata here. Photo formats do keep a field for a name. Some hold a web address as well. Fair enough. Only ask who ever sees one. Somebody looking at your photograph sees a photograph. Nothing on that screen invites them to open a file inspector.
So a picture goes over with nothing readable inside it. Every other submission carries a route back to you. Yours carries an afternoon in somebody’s kitchen and nothing more.
So Image Sharing Splits Into Two Objects
Which is why an image sharing platform stores two things.
There is the picture. Then, kept elsewhere, a line saying where it came from. Somebody typed that line into a field by hand.
Two objects. Only one of them is content anybody arrived to look at. The SEO half is the other one.
Nobody hid anything. It simply rarely gets described as two things.
Somebody Will Point at the Source Line on the Pin
Somebody will say the platform shows the source. It does. Plenty of them print your domain under the image. Some make it a link.
Only ask where that line lives. On the page showing the image.
Take the image off that page and the line stays behind. Save the picture to a desktop. Drop it into a document. Send it to a colleague.
Nothing about any of those copies says where it came from.
So the source is a property of the page. Never of the picture. That sounds like a technicality until you notice which of the two goes anywhere.
The Half That Leaves Is the Half That Cannot Point Anywhere
Pictures move constantly. Much of the appeal runs on that, since a picture gets saved, re-posted, cropped, dropped into a slide deck. Meanwhile a field in a database moves nowhere.
Set it beside writing. Copy a paragraph and the sentences come too, so whoever reads the copy is reading your words. Then copy a picture, and nothing comes with it.
Your photograph is now on screens you will never see. Not one of them holds a way back.
So the portable half carries no address. Meanwhile the half carrying your address stays put. Nobody arranged that. It falls out of what a picture is.
Somebody Will Point at Google Images
Somebody will point at Google Images, where pictures do send people to websites. Fair enough. That traffic is real.
Only look at which pictures those are. They sit on your own website, on a page Google indexed. Which is image optimization, a different job with its own pages here.
Image sharing means putting the file on somebody else’s server instead. Same picture. A different address underneath it.
One of those two can send you a visitor. The other hands your picture over, then hopes somebody reads the small print.
Put the Source Inside the Picture
Which leaves one move. It costs almost nothing.
Should the line not leave with the image, put the source in the picture. A small mark in a corner does it. Better still, photograph something already carrying your name.
The van in the driveway. A sign on the fence. Whatever board sits on the site.
Every copy of that photograph carries it afterwards. Nobody fills in a field. No platform has to agree to show anything.
None of that is a link. It passes nothing to your website. What it does is leave a name somebody can search. Which is worth more than it sounds. A stranger holding a name has somewhere to go.
Where the Image Sharing Argument Stops
None of this says image sharing is a waste. Some platforms genuinely send visitors. That case gets made on the social bookmarking page.
Nor is any of it a warning. No penalty attaches to putting your photographs wherever you like.
Nothing here is a claim about how Google weighs any of it. Nobody outside the company can settle that, so this page will not pretend otherwise.
The point is narrower than it sounds. You are handing over the one object that cannot say where it came from. Then you rely on somebody else’s page to say it for you.
Go and Look for Your Own Photograph
Take the picture you like best. Then go hunting for it somewhere other than your website. A reverse image search settles it.
Should nothing come back, nothing has been copied yet. None of this has cost you anything.
Should it turn up on other websites, open each one. Then look for your name.
No statistic about other people’s photographs settles which of those you are in. Yours is one search away.
Image Work for Calgary Businesses
A folder of good photographs turns up often enough at SEO Company To-The-TOP!, somebody wondering where to upload them for SEO. Often the question worth asking at To-The-TOP! is what those files say about the business with nobody standing beside them.
Businesses across Calgary get the same first hour. We look at what the images are of, then where they sit. To-The-TOP! has been doing SEO and search engine optimization here since 2007. No guarantees. Positions move over three to six months, sometimes longer.
Some of that is keyword research, since the words around an image are what a search engine reads. Whoever wants results faster than SEO delivers should look at a Google Ads campaign instead. The portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached.
Common Questions About Image Sharing in SEO
Does image sharing help SEO?
Mostly it helps the traffic side rather than the ranking side. That argument belongs to the social bookmarking page. What this page adds is smaller. The image you upload carries no route back to you. So whatever help arrives comes through a line on somebody else’s page.
Do image sharing sites give backlinks?
Some carry a link in the profile field, and others in the caption underneath. Whether an attribute on that link passes anything is a separate question, answered elsewhere here. Notice where that caption sits, though. Beside the picture rather than inside it.
Should I watermark my photographs?
That depends what you want surviving the copying. A mark stays with the file wherever it goes, where somebody can see it. Plenty of businesses would rather keep the image clean, which is a fair trade to make deliberately.
Is image sharing the same as image optimization?
No. Image optimization is SEO work on images sitting on your own website. The file names, the alt text, that sort of thing. Meanwhile image sharing puts the file on somebody else’s site. One is about a page you own.
Which image sharing sites are worth using?
That is a traffic question rather than a ranking one. The answer depends on where your customers already spend time. This site handles that under social bookmarking. Pick by audience, never by how many sites you can reach in an afternoon.
