What Is PPC Concrete?

PPC concrete is concrete batched with Portland Pozzolana Cement. Clinker ground up with gypsum, the way any Portland cement is made. Then a pozzolana goes into the same grind. Fly ash usually. Calcined clay sometimes, or a natural volcanic ash where the ground provides one.

That is the definition. Two lines of it.

Those three letters do get around, mind you. Pay-per-click on the marketing floor. Percent Plan Complete in the site trailer. On a concrete order they mean the cement. That cement is what this page is about.

Now the part worth staying for. Nobody orders PPC concrete. Walk onto a site and ask what is arriving on the truck this morning. Nobody answers with a cement type. They answer with a number.

The Bag Has a Type. Your Pour Has a Number.

Concrete gets specified by what it has to do and what it has to survive. A strength figure comes first. Thirty megapascals, say. Then a slump. The crew has to be able to place the stuff. Next comes the exposure condition, once somebody has read the soil report. Then a look at where the thing is actually going to sit.

Not one of those names a cement.

The supplier picks the binder. That is their job. They hold a mix design that reaches your number using whatever is in their silos that month. Fly ash content moves around. So does the source of it. A plant is solving for your specification rather than advertising its ingredients.

So the letters describe a decision taken before the truck was loaded. Possibly before you phoned. What arrives is concrete. It gets judged on the things concrete gets judged on.

That is the soft spot in the question. It asks about the bag. Your drawing asks about the slab.

What the Pozzolana Does Once the Slab Is Wet

Worth knowing what the substitution actually changes, since the real answer is narrower than the marketing around it.

Ordinary Portland cement hydrates and produces two things. One is the binder proper, the calcium silicate hydrate that holds a slab together. The other is calcium hydroxide. Free lime. It contributes very little structurally. Worse than that, it dissolves.

A pozzolana on its own does nothing whatever. Mix it with water and wait all week. Still nothing. It has to have that free lime. Give it lime and give it time, then it converts the stuff into more binder.

Two results follow.

The paste gets denser, since new material now fills pores that were sitting open. And the soluble phase shrinks, since the lime got eaten on the way.

Hold onto that second one. Nearly everything else on this page falls out of it.

Almost Every Gain Lands on Durability

Here is the awkward bit of the PPC concrete story. The property everybody compares is the property the swap helps least.

Strength tables get printed constantly. PPC starts lower. It catches up later. That argument turns entirely on the date the sample was tested. Which is its own discussion, handled elsewhere on this site.

Look instead at the durability a denser, lower-lime paste buys you.

Sulphate resistance comes first. It goes after the products of hydration and pushes concrete apart from the inside. Less free lime leaves it less to work on. Some ground has sulphate in it. A soil report tells you whether yours does.

Chloride ingress is the next one. Road salt carries chloride down toward the reinforcing steel. Steel corrodes. Cover spalls off in sheets. A tighter pore structure slows that trip down considerably. Slowing it down is the whole game.

Then alkali-silica reaction. Certain aggregates react with alkalis in the paste and swell over years. Fly ash is a recognized way of holding that reaction in check.

Heat matters too. Big pours cook themselves from the middle. Less clinker means less heat coming off, which means fewer cracks working their way outward.

Notice what is missing from those four. Not one of them appears anywhere on a strength table.

Somebody Will Say the Spec Does Name the Cement

Fair objection. It is true as well. Plenty of drawings name a cement type outright. A prescriptive specification can call for a blended cement and leave the supplier no room at all.

Only look at when that happens.

It happens on a water tank. On a foundation going into sulphate ground. Also on a mass pour somebody is worried about cracking. Marine work too, where the salt never lets up.

Every one of those is an environment problem. Not one of them is a load problem.

So the spec names the cement precisely at the moment strength stopped being the deciding property. The objection turns out to be the argument. Name the binder where the environment is what threatens the concrete. Otherwise state the performance and let the plant solve it.

What PPC Concrete Costs You Is Time

None of this comes free.

The pozzolanic reaction is waiting on lime. So it runs slow by nature. Early strength comes up more slowly. That is no paper problem either.

Formwork stays on longer. A precast bed turns over fewer times in a week. Cold weather makes all of it worse, since the reaction slows further as temperature drops. Alberta gives you a fair amount of cold weather to think about.

Curing carries more weight as well. One sentence on that, since the point belongs to another page. Cure a PPC pour for three days then walk away. You have paid for a benefit nobody ever collected.

One more caution, since this part gets oversold. PPC is not what makes concrete freeze-thaw resistant. That job belongs to air entrainment. Tiny bubbles do it. Deliberately whipped into the mix on purpose. A pozzolana has no opinion on the matter whatsoever.

The Question a Site Should Ask Instead

Turn the question around.

Not what is PPC concrete. Rather what is this concrete going to spend the next fifty years sitting next to.

Salt, maybe. Sulphate. Water on one face and dry air on the other. Nothing much at all, in the case of an interior slab inside a heated building.

Answer that and the durability question settles the cement type more or less by itself. Hand a supplier the exposure condition and they will bring something that meets it. You may never need to say the letters out loud.

Where the PPC Concrete Answer Stops

This replaces no engineering. Specifications belong to whoever signs the drawings. Those people know things about your site that a web page cannot.

The claim here is narrow. PPC concrete is a real material doing real work in serious structures every day. Yet the label sits one level underneath the decision. That decision is about exposure and durability. The bag is only how somebody meets it.

Read the exposure line on the drawing before reading the cement type. One of them was reasoned about.

The Same Substitution Turns Up in Marketing

Anybody who has hired an agency has met this shape before.

It usually comes out as which tools do you use. Which platform. Or which tactic. Bag questions, all of them.

The one that settles anything is a different question. What does this campaign have to survive? A competitor outspending you four to one. Then a market that only buys in March. Or a phone nobody answers after five in the afternoon.

Put that down first. Tactics fall out of it afterwards, much the way the cement does.

Common Questions About PPC Concrete

What does PPC stand for in concrete?

Portland Pozzolana Cement. It is ordinary Portland cement with a pozzolana ground in alongside the clinker, usually fly ash. Concrete batched with it gets called PPC concrete on site, though the term rarely appears on a drawing.

Is PPC concrete strong enough for foundations?

Yes. Foundations are one of its better uses. They sit in ground. Ground is where sulphate lives. That is the durability problem PPC handles well. The mix still has to meet whatever strength the specification calls for. A plant adjusts until it does.

Does PPC concrete need longer curing?

It does. The reaction runs on lime that ordinary hydration has to release first. So water needs to stay present for longer. Skip the curing and you get the slow start with none of the later gain.

Is PPC concrete better for the environment?

Generally, yes. Its clinker fraction is smaller. Clinker is where most of the carbon in cement comes from. Fly ash is also a by-product of something that was burned anyway. Footprint per cubic metre usually comes out lower as a result.

Do you specify PPC concrete or a strength class?

A strength class and an exposure class, in most cases. Prescriptive specs naming a cement type do exist. They tend to show up where the environment is the thing threatening the structure.

Does PPC concrete resist freeze-thaw better?

Not on its own. Freeze-thaw resistance comes from entrained air first. Air content is specified separately and gets checked on delivery. Cement type is not the thing buying you that resistance.
