What Is SEO and SMM?

SEO means getting found in a search result. SMM means promoting a business on social platforms. That is the whole definition. You had most of it before you arrived.

The rest of the usual answer is published. Which one comes first. What each costs. How to split a budget, and whether social posts move rankings. Each has a page of its own, so none of it gets repeated here. That includes picking SEO or social marketing when the budget only stretches to one.

What nobody does is read the two names.

Three Words Each. Count the Machines.

Three Words Each. Count the Machines.

Search Engine Optimization. Read the middle word.

An engine. A machine. So the name says, before you have done a single thing, that something stands between you and your reader. You still write for a person. Only a machine settles whether the person ever sees it. Nobody had to warn you. The warning sits in the acronym.

Now the other one. Social Media Marketing.

Social. Media. Marketing. Every word there points at people. Not one of them points at a machine.

One name has a machine in it. The other is all people.

There Is a Machine in Both

There Is a Machine in Both

You know this part already.

Something on a social platform decides which of your followers see what you posted. You wrote it for all of them. Then some fraction got shown it.

None of it is a scandal, and nobody hides it. That number usually sits printed under the post.

Still, look at what the name did. It told you that you had an audience. Then it left out who settles how much of that audience turns up.

Optimization Is a Verb With Nobody on the Other End

Optimization Is a Verb With Nobody on the Other End

Here is the other word worth a minute.

Optimize. It points back at your own thing. Your page. The titles on it. Whatever you built. Nowhere inside that verb is a person on the receiving end.

So you can improve a page at eleven at night with nobody watching. On a website nobody has ever visited. Having never once spoken to a buyer.

That sounds like an insult. Instead it is what makes the work available. The job can begin on day one, with no audience anywhere in sight.

Marketing is a different sort of verb. It needs somebody on the other end. You cannot market to nobody. Post to an account with four followers and you have done something. Calling it marketing is generous.

One of Them Can Be Graded With Nobody in the Room

One of Them Can Be Graded With Nobody in the Room

Follow that through. It is where the pair splits.

Ask whether a piece of SEO work got done properly. The page loads or it does not. A machine can reach it or it cannot. The words describe the thing somebody typed, or they do not. Then a position moves, or it sits where it was.

Not one of those answers needed an audience to show up.

Now put the same question to a post. Was it any good?

There is no answer to that which does not run through people. Good means somebody stopped. Somebody laughed. Or shared it. Then picked up the phone. So every grade social work gets is a grade handed out by an audience.

And the audience was metered on the way in.

A Weak Post and an Unshown Post Look Identical

A Weak Post and an Unshown Post Look Identical

The trouble was never the machine. It is what the machine does to a verdict.

Your post lands flat. Nine likes. Thursday comes and you go back to it. The photo was dull, you decide. Weak wording. Then the joke never landed. Maybe so. Perhaps all of it is true.

Or sixty people out of four hundred were shown it. Then the other three hundred and forty never got the chance to have an opinion.

From where you sit, those two look the same. Same weak number. And the same disappointed morning. Yet the name has already told you which explanation to reach for, because the name said the audience was yours.

Search does not do that to you. Sit at position thirty and nobody is confused about why the phone is quiet.

Where the SEO and SMM Argument Stops

Where the SEO and SMM Argument Stops

None of this makes social the weak half, and none of it makes a poor post innocent.

Plenty of posts are simply weak content. The platform is not conspiring either. Mostly it is trying to show people the things people stop on. That is a reasonable thing for it to do. So where nobody stops on yours, that is information as well.

Nor is SEO the easy one. Being checkable with nobody in the room is not the same as being quick. Three to six months is still the plain range before anything meaningful moves. No amount of checking hurries it along.

Stop Grading Posts One at a Time

Stop Grading Posts One at a Time

The useful move falls out of the argument.

Do not ask whether the post was any good. Ask how many people were given the chance to say so.

That figure sits on your own screen. Right under the post. Yet it rarely gets read before somebody rewrites the words above.

Then read a run instead of a single item. Twenty posts tell you something real. One tells you very little, since its number holds two verdicts stirred together. Only one came from a person.

Read the Gap on Your Own Last Ten

Read the Gap on Your Own Last Ten

Open the last ten things you posted. Beside each, write two numbers. How many people follow you. Then how many the platform says saw it.

Now read the gap.

A small gap, and your posts really are being judged by your audience. Take the numbers at face value. Then go and worry about something else.

A wide gap tells you something else. You have spent months rewriting the words in a box. Fixing a problem that was never in the box.

No statistic about somebody else’s account settles that one. Yours is already on the screen.

SEO and SMM at To-The-TOP! in Calgary

SEO and SMM at To-The-TOP! in Calgary

The two acronyms arrive together often enough at SEO Company To-The-TOP!, sold as a single package.

We do the search half of it. Search engine optimization is the patient one, and it answers to work rather than to a scroll. Paid attention is the right tool for some months. A Google Ads campaign buys it plainly. Then it stops the afternoon you say stop. Good keyword research settles which words a customer actually types. Meanwhile the portfolio shows where that work landed.

Solo, since 2007. No guarantees, and no junior handoffs either.

Businesses across Calgary mostly want the same thing out of both. To be found by somebody who was already looking. To-The-TOP! only sells one half of that. The other half is worth having, and it is worth grading properly. The budget split between SEO and SMO depends on where your customers already are. Start that grading with the LinkedIn effect on rankings, where the assumption is thinnest.

Common Questions About SEO and SMM

What is the difference between SEO and SMM?

SEO earns you a place in a search result. SMM promotes the business on social platforms. The deeper split is about who does the judging. SEO work can be checked with nobody watching. Social work only ever gets graded by an audience, and a platform decides how much of that audience shows up.

Does SMM help SEO rankings?

Likes and shares are not something Google counts directly. Social can still put your name in front of somebody who searches for it later. It can also put a page in front of somebody who links to it. That mechanism has its own page here.

Which should a small business do first, SEO or SMM?

That is a money and patience question, and it gets a proper answer elsewhere. The short version. SEO is slow and it keeps working. Social is faster and it needs feeding. Doing both properly at once asks a lot of a small budget.

Why do so few of my followers see my posts?

Something on the platform settles how many of them get shown any given post. The figure usually sits printed under it. Read that number before you rewrite the words. They may never have been the problem.

Is SMM the same thing as SMO?

No. SMO is closer to an optimization job. Tidying the profiles, tuning what gets published. SMM is the whole business of marketing on those platforms. The budget question about SEO and SMO has its own page.
