How to Pick SEO or Social Marketing for Your Business
Go where your customers already are. That is the standard advice, and every version asks about them. Where does your audience spend its evenings. What can you afford. How fast do you need it. Whether you sell to companies or to people. All reasonable questions. Not one of them decides anything.
They decide nothing because they ask about your market. Yet your market is not the thing standing in your way. Two piles of raw material are, and both of them sit inside your own business.

The Usual Answer Asks About Your Customers
Whether social posts move your rankings was settled elsewhere on this site. So was the budget split. The way the two channels feed each other has a page of its own. None of that gets repeated here.
What nobody asks is what you have got. A channel is not a switch on a wall. Each one is fed. What it eats is not the same thing. Feed it nothing and it does nothing.

Both Channels Get Fed. Neither Gets Switched On.
Most writing here treats the two as machines. Turn one on. Watch the customers arrive.
Neither works like that. Social marketing runs on something to show. Search runs on words somebody already types. Those are two different materials. They sit in two different places. Your business either produces them or it does not.
You can hire somebody to work either pile. Neither pile arrives with the hire.
So the question was never which channel suits you. It is which pile holds anything.

Social Marketing Runs on Something to Show
A renovator finishes a bathroom. What stands in the doorway at the end is a picture. It cost nothing. The job made it, and the customer already paid for the job.
They come out of the work all year, whether anybody markets a thing. The material was there before marketing was ever mentioned.
Now take an accountant, finishing a tax return. Almost nothing about that is worth looking at. Not the return. Nor the desk, nor the hours it took. None of that came out of the work. Money does not put it there.
That is the material social marketing eats. Not skill. Nor the expertise every trade holds in some measure. Something that survives the job and can be looked at by a stranger who was never in the room.
Plenty of businesses have it in heaps. Others have none at all. Yet the pile is rarely what gets looked at before somebody is hired to post weekly.

The Quote Graphic Is What an Empty Pile Looks Like
You have seen the account. A tidy grid of sayings in white type on a coloured background. Maybe a stock picture of a handshake.
Nobody sat down and decided to be dull. What happened is plainer than that. Somebody was hired to post. The pile was empty. Something still had to go up on Thursday.
So the agency manufactured content. That is the one job it was never going to do well. It shows. Which may be why you stopped opening the account yourself.
None of that was a discipline problem. It was a supply problem, sitting there from the first day.

Search Runs on Words Somebody Already Types
The other pile is easier to check. It is also not yours.
Search can only answer a question somebody thought to ask. Nobody asking means nothing to answer.
Whether anybody asks after what you sell is a fact about the world rather than about you. Finding out is the whole point of keyword research, and it is a short job.
Plenty of trades pass this easily. People type for plumbers. They type for renovators. Even the accountant, with nothing to show, gets searched for.

The Two Piles Fill Independently
Here is what makes the pick simple. The two materials have nothing to do with each other.
A renovator holds both. That work photographs itself, and the searching has been steady for years.
Meanwhile the accountant holds one. Nobody wants to look at any of it. People search for one all the same.
Then there is the genuinely new product, the one nobody has a word for yet. Plenty to show. Nobody searching for it, since nobody knows what to call it.
So the two piles fill independently. Which is why picking is a stock-take rather than a preference. You are not choosing the channel you like the look of. Instead you are finding out which material you already own.

Where the Test Stops
The stock-take tells you what you have. It never tells you the channel will work.
Material is necessary. It was never sufficient. Somebody with the same pile may have started years ahead of you. Their pages have been collecting traffic ever since, and yours have not.
A full pile is permission to begin. Still not a result.
And none of this says SEO beats social. Social can reach somebody before they have thought to look for anything at all. That trade is argued on its own page. Local event sponsorships sit oddly between the two, which is another argument.

Go and Look in Both Piles
Take an afternoon. Two lists. Neither needs anything you do not own.
Start with your phone. Scroll back through a month of work. Count the pictures a stranger would stop for. Not the ones you are proud of. The ones somebody outside your trade would pause on.
Then open a keyword tool. Type in what you sell, the way a customer would say it.
Whatever comes back, that is the pile you have.
A phone full of pictures and a screen full of searches means you hold both. So the only question left is money and patience. That one is answered elsewhere. An empty phone and a busy screen means search. It also means you can stop apologizing for the quiet account.
Two empty piles tells you something as well. Then no channel was ever the problem.
No statistic about other businesses settles any of this. Yours is on your own phone.

What SEO Company To-The-TOP! Tells Calgary Clients
The question arrives often enough. The first thing worth asking back is what last month’s work left behind.
Some of them hand over a phone full of pictures. Others have nothing to hand over. That is useful information rather than bad news.
To-The-TOP! has been doing SEO in Calgary since 2007. The work here is search engine optimization and Google Ads management. Never social posting. So there is nothing for us to sell you on that side of the fence.
The portfolio shows what the search pile turned into for other Calgary businesses. No guarantees. Three to six months before anything meaningful moves. Some owners want the SMM and SEO basics first, and that is fair. Then comes the harder one, whether to invest more in SEO or SMO.
Common Questions About SEO and Social Marketing
Is SEO better than social marketing for a small business?
Neither is better. One of them may be the only one you can feed. Work that leaves pictures behind can carry social marketing without anybody inventing a thing. A business whose work leaves nothing behind cannot, at any cost. So look in the pile before you look at the channel.
Can I run SEO and social marketing at the same time?
Yes. Plenty of businesses do. The two do not fight each other, since they eat different things. Running SEO and social marketing together is therefore a question of money and hours rather than of strategy. Where the cash is thin, sequence them instead.
What if there is nothing about my work worth photographing?
Then you have your answer, and it is not a criticism. Plenty of good businesses produce little anybody wants to look at. Those businesses usually do get searched for. So that is where the effort belongs.
How long before either one shows a result?
Social shows you something quickly. What it shows is often disappointing. Search takes far longer. Three to six months before rankings move meaningfully, and longer in a crowded market. No guarantees on either side.
Should I pay an agency to run my social marketing?
Only where the material exists. An agency can edit and schedule what your work has produced. It cannot invent the thing worth showing. Pay for the labour. Never for the supply.
