How to Use Reddit for SEO
Reddit hands out no link value. Those links carry a nofollow attribute. What it hands over instead is referral traffic. Some brand visibility as well. Now and then a writer finds your page through a thread, then links to it from their own site.
All of that is real. It also gets covered properly elsewhere on this site, so none of it gets repeated here.
The advice attached to it is equally sound. Be useful. Contribute rather than promote. Do not turn up holding a link.
Nobody explains why it is so hard to follow.
It reads as a matter of tone. Write warmly, sound like a person. Only tone was never the problem. Plenty of businesses have posted a genuinely useful comment and been removed anyway.
Every Other Channel Judges What You Made
Think about what gets evaluated everywhere else.
Google reads a page. Whatever you were thinking while you wrote it stays with you, since none of it reaches the file. So a page published for a purely commercial reason does exactly as well as the same page written out of civic feeling.
The same holds on your own website. Also in an email, and in an ad, where a platform checks your copy. That check reads what you wrote. It does not read you.
So the thing you made gets judged. Never the reason you made it.
Reddit runs the other way round.
Same Words, Two Accounts
Take one comment. A clear answer to somebody’s question, with a link to a page that answers it.
Post it from an account four years old, one that argues about hockey and complains about parking. Nothing about it stands out.
Then post the identical comment from an account a business opened last Tuesday. Now it stands out, and often it comes down. Sometimes the account goes too.
Nothing about the words changed. Not one of them. What changed is what a moderator could work out about why you came.
That is the fact underneath the be-useful advice. Usefulness is not the thing being weighed. Rather it is evidence about your reason for posting. Weak evidence, too, since anybody can be useful for a paragraph.
A Standing Start Is the Signal
Here Reddit collides with everything else in search engine optimization.
SEO carries one quiet advantage nobody names. You can begin today. A page published this afternoon holds no evidence of when the decision got made. So nobody reading it knows whether you started a decade ago or on Monday. The work shows. Meanwhile the motive does not.
Reddit is where that advantage runs out.
An account with no past, posting something helpful with a link inside it, is what a spammer looks like from the outside. No amount of writing gets round that. The only evidence that would clear you is time already spent, and nobody can start that.
So the usual move fails. You cannot arrive.
That explains a pattern people notice. The accounts doing well there rarely read as marketing accounts. They belong to somebody with a trade who has read that subreddit for years. Their business turns up occasionally, and nobody minds. Deciding what to make of document SEO takes a different kind of patience than earning trust on Reddit. Even virtual assistants for SEO tasks cannot fake years of posting under one Reddit account.
Somebody Will Point at the Agency That Runs Accounts
Agencies do this, and some do it well. Those accounts pass.
Only look at what passing costs. Somebody spends months inside those subreddits being a person. Mostly on subjects with no bearing on your business, well before a single link is worth posting. That is no tactic. Rather it is a hire, or it is you.
Which is the plain shape of it. The version that works is the one where SEO was never the reason anybody was there. The same logic applies to what to make of twitter, since the account has to matter before the link does.
The Half of Reddit That Needs No History
Now the useful part, and it costs nothing.
Everything worth having on the reading side is open to anybody. No account. History does not come into it. Nothing anybody can remove.
People describe their problems there in words they would never type into a search box. Nothing about the phrasing has to be efficient. They say what went wrong with the last company they hired. Then they ask the awkward question about price. Also they argue about your competitors while no salesman is in the room.
That material goes straight into your keyword research and the pages you write afterwards. Reading it breaks no rule anywhere.
So the answer comes out lopsided. Read Reddit constantly. Then post only where you were going to be anyway.
Read the Account the Way a Moderator Would
Try this before posting anything.
Find the account you would post from. Then read its history the way a moderator deciding whether to remove you would. How far back does it go? Then count the comments about something other than what you sell.
Should the answer be plenty, over years, you are not really marketing on Reddit. Instead you are somebody who happens to run a business, and that account holds up.
Should the history be short, with every comment circling your own trade, you have your answer. It reads as an account opened in order to post. Nothing about that is a writing problem, so care with the wording shifts nothing.
No statistic about other people’s accounts settles which of those you are holding. Yours is one click away.
Where the Reddit Argument Stops
Reddit threads turn up in Google results constantly. Being named inside one is worth having. Only that is somebody else mentioning you, which is a separate question.
None of this forbids posting either. Plenty of owners post every week without trouble, and each was there anyway.
Somebody will say you can simply declare the business. Some subreddits allow exactly that, and there it works. Only look at what declaring does. It makes your reason legible rather than absent, since the reason was always the thing being read.
Nor is any of it a claim about how a link there gets treated. Nobody outside Google settles that.
Also the reading half ranks nothing on its own. It feeds the work. The work still has to get done.
Using Reddit Sensibly for Calgary Businesses
SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing this work in Calgary since 2007. Reddit turns up in conversation often enough, often as a question about whether to post there.
The answer at To-The-TOP! is mostly that the reading is worth more than the posting. What customers say in those threads goes into keyword research, then into the pages on your website.
No guarantees. Positions tend to move over three to six months. The search engine optimization behind that is patient work rather than clever work. Where a business needs customers sooner, a Google Ads campaign answers that better than any comment. The portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached.
To-The-TOP! is solo and expert-led, so the person reading your market is the person writing your pages. That specific mechanism gets a deeper dive on RSS feed elsewhere, while Reddit threads mostly feed the keyword research itself. Reddit gets weighed the same way blog commenting does here, on whether the reading outweighs the posting.
Common Questions About Reddit and SEO
Do Reddit links help my rankings?
Those links carry a nofollow attribute, so the SEO question is largely settled. What the platform returns is referral traffic and discovery. Sometimes a writer finds your page there and links to it from their own site.
Can I post my own content on Reddit?
That depends on the account rather than the content. A long-standing account posting one relevant link is ordinary. Meanwhile a new account doing the same reads differently, and the words are identical in both cases.
Which subreddits should a local business be in?
The ones you would read anyway. A list you had to look up is usually the wrong list. It means you were never there for a reason of your own.
Does it help that Reddit threads rank so well in Google?
Being named inside a thread that ranks is genuinely worth having. Only you cannot make that happen on demand. So it belongs to the question about brand mentions rather than to this one.
Is it worth paying somebody to run a Reddit account for us?
Price it properly first. You are buying months of a person’s time before anything useful ships. The account has to earn a history before it can carry a link. Some find that worth it. Plenty find the reading half does most of the work for nothing.
