What Is an SEO Keywords PDF?
An SEO keywords PDF is a downloadable file that explains what search keywords are. Nearly all of them then add a list. That is the whole genre, and there are thousands of them.
The explaining part is short. Usually sound, too. Then the list starts. The list is where the file gets its weight.
Weight is not the same thing as worth. Those two halves do not travel equally well.
The Definition Is One Paragraph Long
SEO keywords are the words people type into a search box. Your pages either match those words or they do not. A keyword has two sides. What the searcher wanted. Also the exact phrasing they used to ask for it.
That is the definition. Nothing else is hiding behind it.
Print it. Tape it to the wall. It will still be true in ten years, because nobody is revising what a word is.
So a definition survives a PDF perfectly well. Notice how little room it needs.
So What Makes the File Thick
Open any free seo keywords pdf. Count the pages given over to defining anything. Two, maybe three.
Then look at the rest. Lists of phrases sorted by industry. A volume column running down the side. Often a starter set of a hundred terms for plumbers, or for dentists.
That bulk is the product. Nobody downloads a paragraph. People download the list.
A Keyword List Arrives With an Owner Attached
Ask where any keyword list came from before it reached you.
Somebody built it for a website. They looked at what that business sold. Then at what its pages already ranked for. Also at the phrases it had no chance at this year.
Every line got kept or cut against that one business. The cutting is the job. Most of the work in real keyword research is throwing phrases away, and the survivors only look obvious afterwards.
Strip the Owner and You Have a Vocabulary List
Take that same list. Detach the site it was built for.
What remains is a set of true statements about how people talk. Somebody does search for an emergency plumber in Calgary. That is a fact. It is equally a fact for every plumber in the city. So it belongs to none of them.
A phrase becomes your keyword at one specific moment. The moment somebody decides which page on your site is going to chase it.
Before that decision it is vocabulary. That phrase has an owner afterwards. A page to sit on. Some date by which somebody expects it to move.
A downloaded file cannot make that decision. It has never seen your site.
The Format Complaint Has Its Own Pages Here
There is a standard objection to PDFs. Fixed. Awkward to update. Reading one on a phone is genuinely unpleasant. All of it is fair, and it is argued properly elsewhere on this site.
My problem is a different one. It is not the file format at all. What bothers me is the ratio inside the file.
Three pages that stay true forever. Forty that started expiring on the day of export.
Somebody Will Say the Examples Are the Point
That objection is a good one. Examples teach. Nobody ever learned what a keyword is from an abstract description, so a page of real ones makes the idea land.
Agreed. Then watch what happens to those examples.
They get used. Not as illustration. As a starting list. Someone opens the seo keywords pdf, finds forty terms for their trade, then starts building pages against them.
There is the failure. The file was fine as a lesson. It got promoted to a plan.
An example is supposed to be discarded once it has done its work. Nobody discards this one, since it arrived formatted like an inventory.
The Two Halves Age at Different Speeds
Here is the strange part of the arrangement.
Definitions age at zero. The list ages continuously. Volumes drift. New phrasings turn up whenever a product gets renamed. Entire categories of query appear that nobody typed three years ago.
So one file carries something permanent bound to something perishable. A single date on the cover covers both.
Readers trust both halves equally. Why would they not? Same font.
The Volume Column Is the Part That Cannot Travel
Look at the numbers printed beside each term in the PDF. Somebody pulled those out of a tool. The tool reported a national average. Pulled on some Tuesday, in a year the file never mentions.
Nothing in that column knows about your city. A term showing nine thousand searches nationally might be worth forty a month here. Both figures are accurate. Only one of them pays for the content you were about to write.
Tools disagree with each other, too. Google’s own planner reports ranges rather than counts.
Traffic follows the local number. The printed one just looks better in a document.
Nobody Publishes a List of the Odd Ones
Think about what can go into a public list at all.
Only what a stranger could guess. Broad terms everybody in your trade already knows. Whoever wrote the file knew the industry in general, and knew nothing whatsoever about your business in particular.
Meanwhile the terms that earn money tend to be odd. A part number. Some brand of equipment you service and your competitors do not. Whatever locals call a neighbourhood out loud, which no keyword tool has ever heard anybody say.
Those never turn up in a downloadable file. They cannot. Those terms come out of talking to your own customers, and that is research a PDF is structurally unable to do.
The Only SEO Keywords PDF Worth Keeping Is Yours
There is a version of this file that does work. Building it takes about four minutes.
Open Google Search Console. Go to the performance report. Set the range to the last twelve months, then export the query table.
Every row is a phrase a real person typed before landing on your website. Not an estimate. Nothing like an industry average. Yours, with dates on it.
Print that and you are holding an seo keywords pdf with an owner attached.
Most of it will surprise you. Businesses routinely rank for a handful of things nobody ever targeted on purpose. Those rows beat any downloaded list, since somebody already voted for them with a click.
What This Looks Like on a Calgary Site
Take two businesses selling the same service in the same city. One industry list would technically apply to both of them.
Only one has eleven years of pages behind it. Its competitor launched in March.
The phrase worth chasing is not the same for those two. Not close. An established site can go after the term everybody wants. The new one needs the long, specific questions nobody has answered properly yet.
A downloaded list cannot tell them apart. It does not know either of them exists.
Sorting out which is which is most of what Calgary SEO work actually consists of. SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been making those calls for local businesses since 2007. A quick website audit usually settles which pages could realistically carry which phrase.
Sometimes the answer is that the phrase is out of organic reach this year. Then it becomes a Google Ads question instead. Paid search rents you a position that search engine optimization would spend months earning.
Different budget. Same phrase. Nobody puts that distinction in a downloadable list, because the list does not know what you can afford.
If Somebody Above You Asked for the Document
A fair number of these searches are not curiosity at all. Somebody was told to produce a keyword document by Friday.
Different problem entirely. The file is the deliverable now, so it has to exist. No argument about lists changes that.
Build it so it survives the meeting. Put the definition on page one, since half the room will not have it. Your own Search Console export goes next, with real numbers on it.
Then add the column nobody adds. Which page is going to carry the term.
That column turns a keyword list into a plan. It also exposes where the plan is thin. Two terms assigned to one page usually means one of them is not being chased at all.
A document with that column can be argued about in a room. Forty terms and their volumes cannot, because there is nothing in them anybody could disagree with.
Anyone who has sat through the second kind of meeting knows the shape of it. Everybody nods at the numbers. Nothing gets assigned to anybody. The document goes into a folder.
What to Do With the PDF You Already Downloaded
Keep it. Read the front of it once.
Then treat the list at the back as a vocabulary test rather than a plan. Go through it and ask a blunt question of every line. Would this searcher buy from us?
Most lines will not survive that. Good. A keyword list that never shrinks was never really read.
Nobody ever asks which forty lines they should have deleted.
Common Questions About an SEO Keywords PDF
What is an seo keywords pdf?
A downloadable document explaining what SEO keywords are, almost always followed by a sample list of phrases. The explanation part is stable and fine. That list at the back was built for somebody else’s website.
Are free seo keywords pdf downloads any good?
The teaching half is often accurate. Treat the phrase list as examples rather than as a plan. None of those terms were chosen against your pages or your competition.
Can I just use a competitor’s keyword list?
You can read it. Copying it wholesale ignores the gap between their site and yours. A competitor with a decade of links can hold terms that a newer site cannot reach for a long time.
How do I make my own seo keywords pdf?
Export the query report from Search Console for the last twelve months. Those are phrases people actually used to find you. Add the terms you want and do not yet have, then keep the whole thing in a spreadsheet you can edit.
How often does a keyword list need updating?
Look at it every quarter. Volumes drift slowly. Your own rankings move faster. So do your competitors. The interesting changes are usually on your side rather than in the phrasing.
