Why SEO Packages Are Usually the Wrong Way to Go

An SEO package is a fixed set of work at a fixed monthly price. Bronze, silver, gold. Or one sheet listing what arrives each month.

The usual warning about them concerns labels. Two packages can list the same bullet points while meaning very different work behind each. True enough, and comparing quotes properly is handled elsewhere on this site. So is what belongs in a package, along with the warnings about very low prices. None of it gets repeated here.

Something quieter is worth a look. Not what sellers choose to put in a package. Rather what one can hold at all.

A Fixed Price Has to Hold the Same Work Every Time

They have to name a number before meeting you. Nobody had opened your website when it got written. So every item inside has to cost about the same to deliver, whoever buys it.

Ten titles rewritten cost about the same on any website. So does a monthly report. Four articles cost what four articles cost. Listings take the time they take.

Not one of those needs anybody to look first. None of it is a criticism. It is what makes a price possible in advance.

What Earns a Place in an SEO Package

A test runs quietly behind every package on the market.

An item gets in by being repeatable. Producible the same way for a plumber and for a shop selling boots. Nothing inside surprises anybody, and nothing moves the cost.

Read a package with that test in mind and the contents stop looking arbitrary. Every line passes it.

Now Name the Thing Wrong With Your Website

Then turn the question round.

Whatever holds your website back is the one thing about it not true of everybody else’s. Perhaps the service you make money from has no page. Maybe two pages answer one question and neither wins. Or a redesign left half your addresses pointing nowhere.

Every one of those is specific. Nobody could cost it without looking, and nobody could hand the same fix to the boot shop.

Which is why it sits outside the package. Not because a seller hid it. A fixed price cannot hold a variable.

Somebody will say a seller can absorb the risk. They can, and some do. Only watch what absorbing it takes. The item arrives with a limit bolted on, since nobody promises unbounded work at a fixed price. So a slice of the variable got in, cut to fit the average buyer.

Somebody Will Point at the Audit

Plenty of packages include an audit, which looks like it settles the matter. Somebody runs a crawl, then sends a document. That work is repeatable, so it prices in advance and earns its place.

Then read the line underneath. Whatever the audit turns up has to be fixed, and nobody quoted that last Tuesday.

So a package prices the looking. It was never able to price the fixing.

A Bigger SEO Package Is More of the Same Half

Here is where money goes for nothing.

The natural move after a disappointing package is a larger one. Twice the articles. More listings.

Only the larger package came out of the same test. Everything in it still had to be repeatable. So you bought more of the general, while what you needed stayed specific.

You cannot reach the specific by buying more of the general. A package is no smaller version of the right work. Instead it is a different kind.

Two Businesses, One SEO Package, Opposite Results

Take a single package, then sell it twice.

The first buyer has a website nobody has touched since launch. No titles worth the name. Nothing written in years, and listings half filled in. Everything that business lacks is the repeatable half, so it lands on the problem.

The second buyer already has all of that, done properly two years ago. What stands in their way now is one specific thing, and the package holds none of it.

Same product. The same price, as well. One of those businesses is buying the right work. Meanwhile the other is buying a year of tidy months.

So a package cannot be judged on its own. It gets judged against the website in front of it.

The seller cannot settle it either. Finding out means opening the website and reading it, which is the act a fixed price gets written without.

Somebody Will Say Their SEO Package Was Tailored

Fair enough, since plenty of sellers adjust one after a call.

Only look at what happened. Somebody opened your website, then priced what they found. That is a quote. The word survived. Meanwhile the product underneath it changed.

Where an SEO Package Is Exactly the Right Purchase

None of this makes packages a poor product. The word usually in the question is doing real work, since often enough one is exactly right.

Repeatable work costs less to produce, so it tends to sell for less than the same hours cost otherwise. That saving is real, coming from the repeating rather than from cutting corners.

Where a website lacks the common work, a package holds what is missing at a price custom work rarely matches. Buy it, then stop reading pages like this one.

Where the SEO Package Argument Stops

The constraint sits in the form rather than in the people. Plenty of packaged sellers are excellent, and a fixed bundle says nothing about whether somebody knows the work.

Nothing above is a claim about rankings, either. How Google weighs any of it is not something people outside the company can settle.

Repeatable never meant worthless. Somebody still writes those articles. The listings still get filled in, and both do genuine good on a website short of them.

Name the One Thing, Then Read the List

Write down what stands between your website and more customers. One sentence, in your own words.

Then open the package and go hunting for it.

Should nothing come to mind, that is an answer rather than a failure. You want the common work, which is what a package is made of. Go ahead.

Should the sentence arrive easily, look for it among the bullet points. It will not be there. Now you know what you were about to buy instead.

No statistic about other people’s packages settles which of those you are. Yours is one sheet of paper away.

SEO Work at To-The-TOP! in Calgary

SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing this work since 2007. Businesses across Calgary arrive holding a package they are unsure about, and that uncertainty is often worth following. The first useful hour often goes on reading the website rather than the sheet.

Nothing at To-The-TOP! gets sold as a fixed bundle. Search engine optimization gets scoped after somebody looks, since looking settles the price. Sometimes that means keyword research first. Other times a website audit turns up something nobody expected.

No guarantees. Positions move over three to six months, slower in a crowded market. The portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached. Where speed matters more than patience, a Google Ads campaign does a different job quickly.

Common Questions About SEO Packages

Are SEO packages a scam?

No. They are an ordinary product with a fixed shape. What one can hold is decided by the price being set in advance. A constraint rather than a trick.

What should be included in an SEO package?

The standard list covers an audit and keyword research. Content and on-page work as well, plus links and a report. Which belong in yours is answered elsewhere on this site.

Is a bigger SEO package better than a smaller one?

It holds more of the repeatable work. Where that is what your website lacks, it helps. Otherwise the extra buys what you already had.

Can an SEO package be customized?

It can, and at that point it stopped being a package. Somebody looked at your website, then priced what they saw. A quote wearing an older word.

How do I know whether an SEO package suits my business?

Name the one thing standing in your way, then hunt for it in the list. Anybody unable to name it is usually the buyer a package fits.
