What Is PAA in SEO?

PAA stands for People Also Ask. It is the box of questions sitting partway down a Google results page. Click one and it opens into a short answer, lifted off somebody’s website, with a link back to it.

The standard advice is sound. Find the questions. Answer them plainly, keep the answer tight, put it under a heading that matches. All of that works, and this site covers it properly elsewhere, so none of it gets repeated here. Nor does the other half, where those questions get harvested as topics for your keyword research. Good practice, and well documented.

What nobody puts a question to is the box itself. Not how to get into it. Rather what kind of thing an appearance in it turns out to be.

Every Other Result Is Shown to You

Every Other Result Is Shown to You

Load a results page, then look at what is on it.

Ten links. Some ads above them. Perhaps a map, perhaps an answer box, perhaps an overview. Every one of those arrived with the page. Nobody had to do a thing to produce them.

So they are shown. Whatever is on that page was on it before you did anything at all. The map holds whatever it holds. Read the page or ignore it. The results sitting there do not change. RankBrain in SEO did its work before the page ever loaded. That overview at the top has a name, AIO in SEO.

Then there is the People Also Ask box.

A Few Are Shown. The Rest Get Opened.

A Few Are Shown. The Rest Get Opened.

Search something, and count the questions in that box before you touch it. A handful.

Now click one. Read the answer. Then watch what happens underneath it. More questions arrive.

Click a second and it happens again. So the box in front of you a minute later is not the box the page arrived with. It got bigger. And it got bigger because you were the one clicking.

Almost nothing else on that page works that way. The links do not multiply because somebody read one of them. Nor do product tags and rankings behave like that, whatever the plugin promises.

You Do Not Choose the Question Before Yours

You Do Not Choose the Question Before Yours

Say your answer sits under a question that was not showing on load.

Then somebody has to produce it first. Which means somebody has to open a question above yours. A question you do not own. Chosen by a stranger. For a reason you are never going to learn.

You picked the question you answered. Nobody let you pick the one that comes before it.

So two people can search the same words on the same afternoon. One of them opens a question leading toward yours. The other opens a different one, and your answer never turns up on their screen at all. Same query. One box. Two entirely different mornings.

That is no place you hold, then. Rather it is a place somebody has to arrive at.

Nothing else you win on a results page behaves that way. A ranking sits there for whoever shows up. Nobody has to earn their way down to it.

Somebody Will Point at the People Also Ask Report

Somebody Will Point at the People Also Ask Report

Fair enough. Plenty of SEO software will tell you which of these questions your pages already answer. That count is a real count.

Only put one question to the list. Which of them were showing before anybody touched the box?

A question sitting there on load and a question produced by three clicks each count as one. Eleven answers, eleven rows, adding up neatly. Yet they are not the same object. One of them got shown. The other had to be opened by somebody.

Nothing in a total separates those two. So one is a place on a page. The other is somewhere a person had to go.

The People Also Ask Question Worth Having

So the sort is simple, and it needs no software at all.

The questions showing before anybody clicks are the ones a searcher meets for nothing. Those are the closest the box comes to a position. Everything beneath them gets read as well. Only by fewer, since somebody has to open it first. And which somebody depends on a click you had no part in.

Somebody will say the showing questions move as well. They do. What Google prints on load is not fixed, and it has never been the same for everybody. Fair enough, and watch which way that cuts. The half you took for a place turns out to be less of one than you assumed. Nothing in it makes the opened half any more of one.

None of which makes the rest of the box worthless. Somebody three questions in has stayed with the subject longer than the reader who took the top link and left. Fewer of them, plainly. Still, they went looking.

And you were writing the answer anyway.

Where the People Also Ask Argument Stops

Nobody is penalized here. No rule got broken, and nothing about the box costs you a thing.

Plenty of queries produce no box whatever. What shows belongs to Google. So does how much of it shows. That has changed more than once over the years, so none of this is a rule anybody can be held to. Rather it is a shape you can go and look at this afternoon.

The work is nearly free, as well. That question was going to get answered somewhere in your content, for a reader who needed it. Answering it plainly costs nothing extra. Do it.

None of which is an argument against the box. It is an argument against reading an appearance in it as though it were a rank. Those two get counted together. They were never the same thing.

Read Your Own People Also Ask Box

Search the keyword you most want to win. Then leave the box alone.

Count what is showing in it. Is one of them yours?

Now start clicking, one question at a time, until your answer turns up. Count the clicks it took to get there.

Should the answer be none, you hold a question every searcher meets. Treat it like the position it is. Should it take four, then a stranger had to want something four times over before your business appeared at all. Every one of those four choices was theirs.

No statistic about other people’s boxes settles which of those you are looking at. Yours is one search away.

A list of questions off the box turns up often enough at SEO Company To-The-TOP!, with a page wanted for each one. Often the list is a good one. Yet the better job is usually the plain one. Answer the question your customers put to you on the phone last week. Then let the box come and find it.

That is ordinary keyword research and ordinary search engine optimization, done by To-The-TOP! for businesses across Calgary since 2007. No guarantees. Positions move over three to six months, seldom faster. The To-The-TOP! portfolio shows the keywords this work has reached. And a Google Ads campaign is the better answer whenever the phone has to ring sooner than that.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PAA stand for in SEO?

People Also Ask. It names the box of questions Google prints partway down a results page. Each one opens into a short answer taken off a website, with a link back to the source.

How do you get into a People Also Ask box?

By answering the question directly and plainly, in a tight paragraph, under a heading that matches what somebody typed. That mechanism gets covered properly elsewhere on this site.

Do People Also Ask answers bring traffic?

Some of it. The link sits there, and people take it. Some readers get what they came for inside the box and stay where they are. That trade is worth understanding before you chase the appearance.

Are People Also Ask questions the same as keyword research?

They are one source among several, and a free one. Only remember where those questions came from. They describe a query. Never your customer. Those two are not always the same person.

Does appearing in People Also Ask affect rankings?

Not on its own. It is an appearance rather than a position. Whatever got your answer into that box is the thing doing the work, and that was your page.
