Why SEO Is Actually About Content Marketing

Yes. Mostly. It is also the least useful true thing anybody says about this work.

Mining is about rock. Now go find some.

The reasons behind the slogan hold up. Good writing earns links. It answers what a person meant rather than what they typed. Readers can tell when somebody made a page on purpose. Each of those points is real. All of them are argued at length elsewhere on this site, so none will be argued again here.

What follows is the other half of the sentence. The half it hides.

Mining Is About Rock

Mining Is About Rock

Somebody says it in a meeting. Usually the person who writes.

The slogan rearranges the furniture. SEO stops being a technical trade. Instead it becomes a writing trade, and budgets move accordingly. So do job titles.

And the claim is true. Rock is what comes out of a mine. No rock, no mine. You could announce in the yard of a mining company that mining is actually about rock. Not one person there could contradict you.

They would still not hand you a shovel.

The sentence tells you nothing about where to dig. Truth costs nothing at that height. Ask instead how SEO feeds other marketing channels, and you get somewhere useful.

Rock Is Everywhere and Veins Are Not

Rock Is Everywhere and Veins Are Not

Rock is everywhere. Veins are not.

Anybody can produce more rock. Nobody has ever produced a vein. A vein sat there before the company existed. It will still be sitting there after the company folds. The only decision on offer is whether to dig where it runs.

That is the whole difference. Content marketing produces rock, at whatever volume the budget allows. Search engine optimization is the study of where the veins run.

So a business can publish weekly for two years. Beautiful work. A real editor on staff. Still digging in an empty field.

Good rock. Nothing underneath it.

You Can Write a Page Nobody Can Write a Query

You Can Write a Page Nobody Can Write a Query

Here is the swap.

Content marketing counts documents. One post. A guide. Maybe a short video. The unit is whatever you made.

Search counts queries. Somebody typed a sentence into a box. It existed before you woke up this morning. Tomorrow somebody types it again, whether or not you ever publish anything.

Two different objects, then. You can write a page. Nobody has ever written a query.

That asymmetry runs the whole discipline. Demand for a document gets manufactured. A content marketer does that for a living and does it well. Demand for a query gets found instead. Counted. Sometimes ignored. Never invented.

Both disciplines finish with a page. They begin in opposite corners.

Content marketing begins with a subject. You know something worth saying. So you write it down. Then you go looking for the audience that wanted it. Distribution is the second half of that job. Real work, too.

Search begins with the people. They are already standing somewhere, already typing. The subject is whatever they happen to be standing on.

So one job carries a document out to find a crowd. The other walks to where the crowd already gathers and lays a document under their feet.

Same material. Reverse order.

Take Your Last Ten Posts

Take Your Last Ten Posts

Open your blog. Scroll back to the last ten things you published.

For each one, write down the sentence a person typed into Google to land there. Not the topic. Never the category. The exact sentence, in their words, the way they would say it aloud to a friend.

Some will come easily. Others will not come at all.

Whatever you could not fill in, you wrote from the inside out. That subject came off your own desk. It may still be a fine post. The newsletter may well have loved it. Yet it was never addressed to anybody who was looking.

No statistic would help you here. You have your own number now.

What the Sentence Costs the Person Repeating It

What the Sentence Costs the Person Repeating It

The slogan often gets repeated by people trying to raise the standard of the work. That is the awkward part.

Somebody is tired of thin pages built around a phrase. So they say SEO is actually about content marketing, meaning write something worth reading. Fair enough.

Yet believing it hands you a method along with the slogan. That method starts with a subject you chose. Which is precisely the habit the slogan was coined to cure.

The loss never shows up as a ranking you dropped, though. It shows up as a page that never had one. Plenty of businesses have written beautifully about a subject nobody was looking for, then wondered why the traffic never arrived. The article marketing habit died of exactly that, one lovely page at a time.

Two Times the Sentence Is Exactly Right

Two Times the Sentence Is Exactly Right

Two conditions turn the slogan into good advice.

Here is the first. You already rank and nobody stays. The vein was found. Traffic arrives. It reads one line and leaves. The search half of the job is done. Every remaining problem is a writing problem, so content marketing is the entire fix.

Now the second. Nobody searches for what you sell. Some businesses genuinely have no vein. A new category, or a product people have no word for yet. Search cannot serve a query nobody thinks to type. Content marketing carries the load then, alongside paid distribution. It earns the demand that search will collect later.

Both cases share one feature. You had to know which of them you were in before the advice could do you any good.

What We Tell Calgary Clients

What We Tell Calgary Clients

SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing this since 2007. The conversation runs the same way most times.

An owner wants a blog. So we ask what the blog is meant to catch.

Sometimes there is a list of sentences real customers type. Then keyword research comes first and the writing follows it. Sometimes no such list exists, because nobody types anything about that product yet. We say so. Then we point at Google Ads, where attention can be bought outright.

Neither answer is quick. Rankings move over months, and our SEO services are priced on that understanding. Owners looking for SEO in Calgary hear the timeline before they hear anything else.

Meanwhile the writing gets better either way. That part was never in dispute. Nothing about the craft of SEO copy changes just because the search term came first.

Common Questions About SEO and Content Marketing

Is SEO just content marketing with keywords?

No. Both produce pages for the same website. Only one of them starts from a sentence somebody else already typed. That difference decides the subject, and the subject decides almost everything downstream.

Does content marketing work without SEO?

Yes, it does. Email, social platforms, podcasts and word of mouth all move documents to readers. Search is one distribution channel among several. Also the only one where the reader arrives already asking.

Should I hire a content marketer or an SEO specialist?

Depends which case you are in. Ranking already, with readers who bounce, points at a writer. No search demand at all points at a marketer. Neither is a permanent condition.

Can a page rank without being good to read?

Sometimes. That question belongs to the writing side of the work. Our SEO blog covers it in depth, so this page leaves the argument alone.

How do I find out whether anybody searches for my topic?

That is keyword research, and it has its own page here. Look up the volume before commissioning the article rather than after. The order matters more than the tool.
