What Is RankBrain in SEO?
RankBrain is a machine learning system Google added to search in 2015. Its job is to work out what an unfamiliar query means. So a query nobody has typed before still gets understood.
That is the definition, and this site covers it elsewhere, alongside the other named updates. None of it gets repeated here. Nor does the second half, where somebody explains how to optimize for RankBrain. Write for humans. Cover the topic properly. Earn the click. All of it is decent advice about SEO in general, and not one line of it is about RankBrain.
This page is about why.

Panda Read Pages. Penguin Read Links. RankBrain Read the Question.
Line the famous names up.
Panda arrived at your website. Then it read your content and reached a verdict. Penguin read the links pointing at you, then reached another. The helpful content system reads pages. Core updates read pages. Every one of them is a grader. Something turns up, reads what you built. Then it settles something.
RankBrain is not built like that.
It works on the query a stranger typed into a box. Not on your website. Nor on anybody else’s.
Somebody will say RankBrain is part of the ranking system, so it must touch pages. Fair enough. Only look at the job it gets credited with. Reading an unfamiliar query, then working out what it means. Nothing you write on a page goes into that.
A query comes in. Google has seen some countless times. Others it has never seen, since people phrase things oddly and always have. Working out what those are asking is the job. PAA in SEO sits on the other side of that, once the query is understood. Machine learning is the label people reach for here, and it fits this part.

It Finished Before Your Website Turned Up
Follow the order of events.
Somebody types. Then a system reads the query and settles what the question means. Only after that does anything go looking for pages to answer it.
So by the time your website enters the story, RankBrain has done its work and gone.

So Nothing on Your Page Was Ever Addressed to It
Everything you do to a page is aimed at something that reads pages.
A quicker load. Then a clearer heading. The answer moved up where somebody will find it. Every one is a message, addressed to whatever comes and reads your website.
Yet nothing on a page is what RankBrain was built to read. Nothing you put there can be addressed to it. It is not standing on that side of the search box.
Optimizing for RankBrain is no hard job done badly, then. Rather it is a job with nothing at either end of it.
So the how-to-optimize-for-RankBrain article is a strange object. Real advice, pointed at a system that was never going to read it. Advice about a one page website at least lands on something that reads.

Somebody Will Point at Dwell Time
Fair enough. RankBrain is widely said to learn from what searchers do afterwards. So a page people stay on feeds something back.
Only look at what that concedes. Even then the system is not reading your page. It reads what people did once they left the results.
That is a report on your page, written by strangers. The only way to improve one is to be worth staying on.
Which is what everybody advises anyway. Serve the reader. Notice how little RankBrain has to do with it.

What RankBrain Changed Was Who You Are Standing Beside
Here is the part nobody names.
A system deciding what a question means is a system deciding which questions are the same question.
Take two queries. How do I stop my basement flooding, and basement waterproofing Calgary. Those were two strings once. So two results pages, and two separate competitions. Whoever held the odd words got the quiet one.
Then a machine reads both queries and decides they are one question. Back comes a single results page.
Nobody demoted anybody. No ranking got taken off you. Your page did not get worse. The competition it was quietly winning stopped existing.
So the pages that used to sit alone on an unusual phrasing now stand beside whoever wins the plain one. None of that was a judgment about your website. Nothing about your website came into it at all.

The Half of RankBrain That Went in Your Favour
It cuts the other way as well. Generously.
The machine works on meaning. So your page no longer has to hold the exact phrase to be eligible. Words matter less than they did. Meanwhile the question matters more.
Look at what that trades away. Picking keywords used to carry a guess inside it. Which phrasing will they type? Research it all you like. Still a guess.
A question is not like that. You can ask a customer what they want to know. Ask how they will type it and what comes back is a guess, from them as well.
So the machine took away a guess. Then it handed back something you can find out.

Where the RankBrain Argument Stops
None of this moves a ranking by itself. Not everything merged, either. Two phrasings can look alike and still be two questions, and a results page will tell you which.
Nor is this a reason to stop caring about keywords. You still have to know what people ask, and the words remain how you find out. The words stopped being the target. They became the evidence.
One more limit. Nobody outside Google can tell you how much of today’s search still runs through anything by that name. It is over a decade old. Plenty has been built since.

Search Your Keyword Twice
Take the keyword your SEO is aimed at. Search it.
Then say it out loud, the clumsy way a customer says it on the phone. Search that instead.
Read both results pages. Count the websites turning up on both.
Should most appear twice, you have one question and one competition. Whatever phrasing you settled on bought you nothing, since you were never competing for words.
Should the two pages barely overlap, you are looking at two questions. Then you have found a page you have not written.
No statistic about other people’s keywords settles which of those you are in. Yours is two searches away.

What RankBrain Means for a Calgary Business
A keyword list and a worry about machine learning turn up together often enough at SEO Company To-The-TOP!, here in Calgary. Often the worry is pointed at the wrong thing.
Machine learning changed plenty. It did not change the work. Somebody still has to find out what customers ask, then answer it better than the pages already there. Good keyword research is where that starts, and it starts with people rather than software. Everything after it is ordinary search engine optimization, done patiently, the way To-The-TOP! has been doing it since 2007. Businesses wanting SEO in Calgary can see the terms this work has reached in the portfolio.
Three to six months before anything meaningful moves. No guarantees. Where a business needs customers sooner, a Google Ads campaign answers demand that already exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is RankBrain in simple terms?
A machine learning system inside Google search. It reads the words somebody typed, then works out what they were asking. That matters most on a query nobody has typed before.
Can you optimize for RankBrain?
No, and not because it is difficult. RankBrain works on the query rather than on your website, so nothing on your page is addressed to it. Answer the question better than the pages already there, and you have done the part that is yours.
Is RankBrain still used?
Nobody outside Google can say how much of search still runs through it. Plenty has been added since 2015. The behaviour has not gone anywhere.
Does RankBrain mean keywords no longer matter?
They still matter. Their job changed. They used to be the thing you had to match. Now they are how you work out what people are asking. A different and better use.
Did RankBrain make ranking harder?
For some pages, yes. Phrasings that once had a results page of their own get folded into one. So a page winning a quiet corner can find itself beside the winners of the busy one. None of it was a verdict on the page.
