Why SEO Costs Vary for Law Firms
Ask three agencies what SEO will cost your firm. Three numbers come back. They are not close.
The stock answer to that is competition. Crowded market, dearer work. That answer is right. This site publishes it properly already, with the pricing models and the ranges and everything else moving the figure. So none of it gets repeated here.
Only it stops one step short. Competition explains why a law firm pays more than a bakery. It does not explain the other thing. Two firms on the same street, same size, same number of lawyers. Their quotes are nowhere near one another.

The Word Firm Is Doing Too Much Work
Your firm has one name. A single address. One website, one letterhead, one phone number.
None of that is a market.
Search does not deal in firms. It deals in trouble. Somebody has been rear-ended. Down the street a marriage is ending. Somebody’s mother died holding a will nobody can find. Three people, three afternoons, three entirely different sets of words typed into a box.
Not one of them is looking for a law firm. Each is looking for a way out of one specific piece of trouble.
So a firm with four practice areas is not one business with a marketing problem. Rather it is four businesses sharing a hallway.

Two Searches Settle It
Do not take that on trust. Open a fresh window, then search for a personal injury lawyer in your city. Read the whole first page. Then search for somebody to draft a will. Same city, same afternoon.
Look at who is standing there.
One of those results pages is a wall. National names. Directories with budgets. Pages somebody has been paid to rewrite for years.
The other one is quieter. Local firms. A page somebody wrote once, years ago. Nobody has been back to it.
Same city. Possibly the same searcher, a different year of their life. Little about the two markets is comparable. Both of them are you.

The Cost Sits a Level Below the Quote
Here is where the money hides.
An SEO quote gets written for a website. One site, one retainer, one number at the bottom. That is how the work gets sold, and how every firm buys it.
Yet the cost never accumulates at the level of the website. It accumulates inside each practice area separately. Then it accumulates at wildly different rates.
Notice how little the work itself changes. Somebody researches. Then somebody writes. Later, somebody goes and earns a link. Some legal writing takes longer than the rest, of course. Never by the multiple your three quotes were apart.
The market decides the rest of it.
So the number on your quote describes a website. Meanwhile the cost was never a fact about your website at all.

Nobody Chose That Market as a Marketing Decision
Ask how your firm came to do the work it does.
Somewhere back there a partner joined who liked family law. A retiring lawyer handed over a book of wills. Somebody took an injury file as a favour, it went well, then another one arrived.
That is how practice areas turn up. Slowly, sideways, mostly through people.
Hardly any of that was a marketing decision. Search results were rarely in the room. Still, whichever of them stuck now sets the market your SEO has to work in.
The quote arrives this quarter. Its reason arrived years ago. That history is doing most of the work in law firm SEO. That is also why SEO for an injury practice prices differently from a wills desk.

One Number, Aimed at Four Places
Now watch what happens to the retainer.
It gets set for the firm. Then it spreads across whatever the firm happens to do, since it has to go somewhere and nobody broke it out.
So the easy market gets more money than it needed. Meanwhile the hard one gets a fraction of what it would take. Every practice area ends up funded at the blend, and the blend was never aimed at any of them.
A ranking is not something you can buy a portion of. That argument belongs to another page and it is worth reading. Here it is enough to notice what a blended budget tends to do. It buys steady, visible progress in the market nobody was worried about. Then it buys a year of quiet in the one paying for the office.
The reports still look fine. Something moved. It always does.

Ask for the Quote by Practice Area
One question costs nothing and changes the conversation.
Ask what the number would be for one practice area. Just the one you want the phone ringing about.
Anybody who can answer has been thinking about your market. A blank answer means the thinking stopped at your website, which is a different subject and a much easier one.
Then ask what falls off the list if you fund only that.

The Advantage a Plumber Never Gets
None of this is bad news. One part of it is close to a gift.
A plumber cannot decide to be in a quieter market. He fixes taps. A tap fails, and the words people type are the words he is stuck with. Every other plumber in the city stands on them.
You are not stuck. A firm doing four things holds four separate markets, priced four different ways. So you can start where you are able to win. Then you fund the expensive market out of whatever the winnable one brings in.
That is a real strategy. Also it is only available to a business shaped like yours.

Where the Law Firm SEO Cost Argument Stops
Plenty of firms genuinely do one thing. A boutique immigration practice has one market and one price, and the standard cost drivers explain their quote well enough. Nothing here applies to them.
Some of the bill really is shared, as well. Site speed serves every page you own. So does a clean structure. Whatever standing the domain has built serves them too. A website audit finds all of it once.
That half is simply the smaller half. Whatever decides your position on injury work gets written one practice area at a time, and little of it carries across.
No article about wills has ever written the page you need for a car accident. Picking an SEO firm for a law practice turns on exactly that.

What This Looks Like at To-The-TOP!
SEO Company To-The-TOP! has been doing SEO in Calgary since 2007. Legal clients turn up holding quotes, same as everybody else.
The first hour goes on keyword research, one practice area at a time. Not the firm. The markets inside it. That is where a client often finds out two of their service lines sit wide open. Also that one of them is a five-year project.
Sometimes the answer is a Google Ads campaign in the expensive market while search engine optimization does the patient work everywhere else. The portfolio shows where that patient work ended up.
No guarantees. Three to six months before anything meaningful moves, same as ever.
Common Questions About Law Firm SEO Costs
Why did three agencies quote my firm three completely different numbers?
Often they priced three different things. One priced your whole website. Another priced the practice area you talked about most. A third priced the hardest market you mentioned in passing. Ask each of them which markets their number covers.
Is personal injury really that much more expensive?
It is a different order of competition. Search it yourself, then look at who is on page one. What you find will convince you faster than a figure from anybody selling something.
Should a firm pick one practice area to promote?
Frequently, yes. A budget spread across four markets is a budget aimed at nothing in particular. Choosing one is not giving up on the others. Rather it is deciding which one goes first.
Does ranking for family law help us rank for injury work?
Not directly. Whatever standing the site has built carries across a little. The content does not, and the links an estate planning page earned were earned for an estate planning page.
How long before a law firm sees anything?
Three to six months for meaningful movement in an ordinary market. Longer where the competition is entrenched, and injury work is entrenched nearly everywhere. Anybody promising you faster is guessing.
