How to SEO on TikTok: What Actually Moves the Algorithm

A client asked about TikTok SEO last winter. They ran a home services business in Calgary, mid-size, with solid Google rankings built through our work as the SEO agency Calgary businesses trust. Their question was simple: should we be on TikTok, and does it matter for search?

Good question. The straight answer takes more than a paragraph.

TikTok has quietly become one of the most-used discovery tools for people under 35. Restaurant recommendations. Product reviews. How-to tutorials. Younger buyers check it before they check Google. That shift is real, and business owners who ignore it are not wrong, but they should at least know what they are passing on.

This guide covers how TikTok SEO actually works, what the algorithm looks for, and whether the effort makes sense for your type of business.

TikTok Has Its Own Search Engine Now

Still feels like a dancing app to some people. It is not.

The platform processed roughly 1 billion queries per day in 2024. A dedicated search tab has been there for years. Users type queries into the TikTok search bar the same way they type into Google. They get results ranked by relevance signals, not just a chronological feed. That distinction matters when your goal is discoverability.

Ranked search results are not random here. Relevance, engagement, and watch time all feed into which videos surface for which queries. That combination makes TikTok SEO a real practice, not a buzzword.

What makes this platform different from traditional search engines is the content format. Videos, not pages. Audio, not text. Both get read, though. Spoken words get transcribed. Captions get indexed. Hashtags get clustered. Everything visible on screen gets processed.

How TikTok’s Algorithm Decides What Gets Found

Worth knowing before assuming this is purely about going viral. The algorithm is deliberate.

TikTok’s algorithm scores every piece of content across two separate tracks: the For You Page (FYP) distribution and the search results. Both matter. A video that dominates the FYP may rank poorly in search results for a specific query. Content optimised for a niche query may never trend but will consistently surface for that search.

Watch time and completion rate

Completion rate is the sharpest signal the app has. A video people watch all the way through tells the system the content matched expectations. Viewers who skip at three seconds send the opposite message.

That threshold is significant. Internal data from the company, which has leaked across the industry, confirms the first three seconds determine whether distribution continues. A front-loaded hook, a specific question, a visual surprise: these are not stylistic preferences. They are ranking factors.

Longer watch time accumulates into what the system calls retained audience. Your videos that hold attention get pushed to more users. Smaller test batches first, broader distribution after.

Engagement signals

Likes. Shares. Comments. Saves. All four feed the ranking system, but saves carry disproportionate weight. A save signals intent: the viewer wanted to return to your content later. The platform reads that as strong interest in the topic and the account.

Comments matter too, specifically comments that contain the keywords your video targets. When users ask follow-up questions using your topic terms, the content registers as genuinely relevant to those queries. Encouraged discussion is community building and a ranking signal at the same time.

Keyword and text relevance

This is where TikTok SEO connects to what we already know from Google SEO. Keywords in your captions, in spoken words, in on-screen text overlays, and in hashtags all signal relevance to the ranking system. Audio gets transcribed. What you say on screen gets indexed the same way captions do.

Effective creators treat every video like a landing page. Target phrase first. Supporting context second. Specific enough to match actual search queries, broad enough to reach adjacent viewers on the FYP.

Finding the Right Keywords for TikTok

Keyword research for the platform is faster than for Google. No tools required to start.

The TikTok search bar as a keyword tool

Open the app. Type your topic into the search bar. Do not press enter. Watch the autocomplete suggestions. Those suggestions come directly from what users actually search. They are the TikTok equivalent of Google’s autocomplete, pulled from real query volume in your niche.

The search bar reveals which phrasing people prefer. “Home decor ideas” behaves differently from “home decor inspo.” “Calgary restaurants” behaves differently from “best restaurants Calgary.” Autocomplete shows which version has traction. Start there.

After running the search, look at the results page. Related searches appear below the top results. Those clusters reveal the full topical map of your niche. Competitor captions are visible too. The terms that appear repeatedly across top-performing videos are the keywords worth targeting.

Looking at what competitors are doing

Find the accounts in your niche that consistently appear in search results. Look at their captions, not just their content. Which phrases repeat? What hashtags appear across multiple high-performing videos? That is directional competitor keyword research, available for free inside the app.

Tools like SEMrush have added this kind of data in recent years, though coverage is still thinner than for Google. For most business owners, the in-app method is more practical and faster.

An important note: your target audience matters here. The terms Gen Z uses to search for something differ from the terms millennials use. Both groups are on the platform now. Know your audience before settling on a keyword list.

Where to Put Keywords in Your TikTok Content

Four places. Not one. All four matter.

Spoken words in your videos

Audio gets transcribed automatically. Say your target keyword in the first fifteen seconds. Then say it again naturally later. The transcript feeds the ranking system the same signal as a written caption.

This is why videos that speak directly to the topic tend to outrank videos that only show it. A cooking creator who says “gluten-free pasta recipe” out loud will rank above a creator whose food looks identical but who never says the phrase. Speak your keywords.

Captions and text overlays

Your captions should contain the primary keyword within the first sentence. The caption limit was extended to 2,200 characters. That space is indexable. Use it.

Text overlays appear on screen during the video. Vision models can read them. Adding your keyword as on-screen text reinforces the relevance signal from the audio transcription and the caption. Redundancy, in this case, helps discoverability.

Keep captions conversational, not keyword-stuffed. One primary keyword. Two supporting phrases at most. Written for the viewer first. User behaviour is what the system is built on; it eventually penalises content that reads like a keyword list and gets poor engagement as a result.

Hashtags: still useful, just not the whole strategy

Hashtags cluster your content into topic categories. They are not the dominant ranking signal they once were. The platform has shifted toward semantic understanding of captions and audio. Still, three to five relevant hashtags per video add a clear categorical signal.

Mix broad and niche hashtags. A broad hashtag like #SEO places your content in a crowded category. Niche hashtags like #TikTokSEO signal specific relevance to a smaller but more engaged audience. That engaged audience is more likely to save and share, which feeds the engagement signals that distribution needs.

#FYP and #ForYouPage hashtags have no demonstrated ranking benefit. Placeholders, not strategy.

The For You Page vs. TikTok Search Results

Two different things. Two different strategies.

The FYP serves content based on interest signals: past watch history, account interactions, video completion rates. Someone who has never searched for your content can still see it on their FYP if the algorithm decides they will find it relevant. Broad reach to people who were not looking for you.

TikTok search results serve content based on query intent. Someone who types “best restaurants Calgary” into the search bar is actively looking for something specific. Showing up in those search results is a different opportunity entirely. Narrower reach, but higher purchase readiness.

Successful accounts target both simultaneously. The FYP builds your audience. Search builds discoverability for specific queries. Videos optimised for TikTok SEO often have longer shelf lives than FYP-optimised videos, because search traffic does not expire the way trending content does.

The takeaway for business owners: FYP virality is hard to engineer. Search visibility on TikTok is more predictable and more directly tied to what potential customers are actively looking for.

Discoverability Beyond the Algorithm

The algorithm is not the whole picture. Worth saying plainly.

Your TikTok profile as a landing page

Your profile is indexed. The bio is text the app reads. Include your primary keyword or your niche in the profile bio. A Calgary-based kitchen renovation business should have “Calgary kitchen renovations” visible in their bio, not just their brand name.

Profile photo, username, and account name all contribute to how your account appears in search results for branded and topical queries. Treat the profile as a second landing page. The search bar returns account results alongside video results. An optimised account can appear in both.

Trending sounds and their role in reach

Trending audio is a distribution accelerator. Sound trends on TikTok move fast. Videos using sounds that are currently spiking get a temporary reach boost. The app tracks which sounds are being saved, shared, and searched, then distributes content attached to those sounds more broadly.

For your TikTok SEO specifically, sounds are secondary to keyword relevance. A trending sound does not help a video rank for a search query. It can get a video in front of more viewers, some of whom may search for your content directly afterward. More profile visits generally mean more followers, which strengthens the account authority signals the algorithm factors into search distribution.

The practical move is to use trending sounds when they fit naturally with your content, not to force a trend that makes no sense for your niche or your brand.

TikTok SEO vs. Google SEO: What Business Owners Should Know

Different systems. Both worth understanding, but not interchangeable.

Google SEO, the discipline behind our search engine optimization work and the SEO services Calgary clients hire us for, is built on domain authority, backlinks, crawlability, page speed, and structured content. Rankings compound over months. A well-optimised page can hold a position for years. The investment has a long tail.

TikTok SEO has no domain authority. No backlinks, no crawl budget, no technical audits required in the same way. The equivalent of a website audit on this platform is reviewing your account analytics. Engagement decay is a real factor: video content loses reach faster than a Google-indexed page. Consistent output is required to maintain visibility.

The overlap is in keyword research. Understanding what your audience searches for, on any platform, requires the same thinking. The queries differ in phrasing and format, but the underlying intent research is similar. Businesses that already do SEO for their website will find the keyword mindset transfers faster than businesses starting from scratch.

The straight comparison: Google SEO is slower to build but more durable. TikTok SEO is faster to test but requires ongoing content production. Neither replaces the other for a business that serves local search queries. A customer looking for a Calgary electrician on TikTok is still going to Google to actually find and call one.

TikTok analytics dashboard showing video views, profile visits, and search impressions on a business account

Tracking Your TikTok SEO Progress

Numbers worth watching. Not all of them equally.

The analytics dashboard is free on creator and business accounts. Video views are the vanity metric most people check. Useful for benchmarking, not for diagnosing your TikTok SEO performance specifically.

Profile visits are a sharper signal. A spike in profile visits after a specific video means that video reached people curious enough to investigate the account. Those viewers are the ones who might follow, search for your content again, or click through to your website.

Search impressions, available in analytics for business accounts, show how often your videos appeared in search results for specific queries. This data is the closest equivalent to Google Search Console’s impressions column. Look at which queries you are already appearing for, then double down on the videos that perform well in those results.

Follower count matters less than follower growth rate in a defined time window. A spike in followers after an optimised video tells you something about audience-topic fit. Flat growth after weeks of posting suggests a keyword or content mismatch. That is the signal to adjust rather than simply double the volume.

These insights, taken together, are what your TikTok SEO strategy should be built on. Actual behaviour from actual users.

Is TikTok SEO Worth It for Your Business?

Depends on your audience and your patience for video content.

B2C businesses with visually demonstrable products or services have the clearest case. A home decor brand, a restaurant, a personal trainer, a local boutique: these businesses map naturally to the format. Their target audience is already on the platform. The content practically creates itself.

B2B businesses face a harder case. The dominant audience skews toward Gen Z and younger millennials. A legal firm, a commercial property manager, an industrial supplier: the decision-makers are not predominantly here, and the platform’s format does not suit complex service explanations well. LinkedIn and Google remain stronger channels for that audience.

Local service businesses are somewhere in between. A plumber or HVAC contractor will find the app useful for brand awareness among homeowners, but the direct conversion path from a video to a booking is longer than from a Google search result. Pairing video content with a strong Google presence, including Google Ads management for paid reach, is a more complete strategy. It captures both awareness-stage and decision-stage buyers.

One more reality check: this takes time. Consistent posting, two to four videos per week, for three to six months before meaningful traction. That is a real production commitment. For businesses already stretched thin, the time investment has a cost. Worth factoring before starting, not after three weeks of underwhelming numbers.

Businesses that do it well tend to batch their content. Film twelve to fifteen short videos in a single session. Schedule them across three to four weeks. Review what works. Adjust keywords. Repeat. Sustainable, not frantic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do SEO on TikTok?

Absolutely. The platform has a real search function with ranking signals. Captions, spoken audio, text overlays, hashtags, and engagement metrics all influence which videos surface for specific queries. TikTok SEO is different from Google SEO in mechanics, but the practice of optimising content for discovery is the same. The search bar autocomplete is the fastest starting point for your keyword research on the platform.

What is the 3 second rule in TikTok?

Three seconds is the threshold. The algorithm uses that window to decide whether to continue distributing a video or pull back. A viewer who watches past three seconds signals genuine interest. Someone who scrolls away in the first two signals the opposite. Content creators talk about “the hook” constantly for this reason: the opening frame, question, or visual needs to hold attention immediately. Check your video’s three-second retention rate in analytics; it is one of the most direct indicators of distribution potential.

Does TikTok pay $1 for 1000 views?

No fixed rate exists. The Creator Fund and, more recently, the Creativity Program pay varying amounts based on region, video length, and engagement quality, not just raw view counts. Reported rates generally fall between $0.02 and $0.04 per thousand views through the Creator Fund. Longer videos monetised through the Creativity Program tend to earn more. Revenue for most creators is more realistically built through brand partnerships, affiliate links, and product sales than through platform payouts alone.

How to make $1000 a month on TikTok?

Platform payouts alone will not get most accounts there. At $0.03 per thousand views, a million views generates roughly $30 from the Creator Fund. Real income comes from affiliate marketing, brand sponsorships, selling products through TikTok Shop, or driving traffic to an external business or offer. A business using TikTok as a marketing channel to drive local SEO traffic and bookings is using the platform the way it actually works commercially: as a top-of-funnel awareness driver, not a direct revenue source. For paid reach alongside your organic content strategy, Google Ads management gives the most predictable return per dollar spent.
