What Is Link Building in SEO? How Backlinks Influence Rankings

Every link audit we run on a new client site tells a similar story. Thin backlink profiles with three or four links from directories the owner signed up for in 2011, nothing earned since. Meanwhile the top-ranked competitor in the same category has 80 referring domains from industry publications, local press, and association sites. That gap is why the competitor holds position 1 and the client is on page 3.

Link building is the process of earning links from other websites to your own. Incoming links, called backlinks, carry authority from the linking site to yours. Google reads that authority signal when deciding how pages should rank. More quality links from relevant sources generally means higher positions. The connection is not subtle: what backlinks are and how they influence rankings has been the dominant off-page SEO signal since search engines began.

    How Content Marketing Helps SEO

Content marketing and SEO run in separate budget lines at most businesses. Sometimes separate agencies, separate teams, separate planning cycles. To-The-TOP! has been running Calgary SEO campaigns since 2007, and this split-resource problem still comes up regularly: one team producing material, another team chasing rankings, neither delivering results the other can use.

The reason they underperform in isolation is straightforward. SEO without content has no material to rank. Content without SEO has no signal structure telling search engines what it covers or why it should be trusted. Both strategies need the other to function.

    How to Improve Local SEO

Four signals drive local search rankings: Google Business Profile completeness, citation consistency, review volume, and local backlinks. Get all four working and visibility in the map pack follows. Miss one and the others compensate less than most business owners expect. The question that comes up constantly: which one do we fix first? Start with the profile. Everything downstream depends on it.

What follows is the sequence we use for local SEO programs. Each section covers one lever. Order reflects impact, not alphabetical convenience.

What Are SEO Keywords? How They Drive Search Rankings

Type something into Google. Whatever words you used are keywords. On the other side of that search, websites are competing to appear for exactly those words. The ones that rank did not land there by chance. Someone chose which keywords to target, built content around them, and let the ranking process play out over several months.

SEO keywords are the specific words and phrases you deliberately optimize your pages to rank for. Choose the right ones and your website attracts visitors actively searching for what you offer. Pick the wrong ones and your content builds rankings for phrases nobody types. To-The-TOP! has been making these decisions for Calgary SEO clients since 2007, and keyword strategy still shapes results twelve months after the first choice is made.

What Is SEO Writing? A Practical Guide

SEO writing is the practice of writing content that ranks in search engines while still reading well for the person who clicks. Two audiences, one piece of text. The search crawler that decides where the result lands, and the reader who decides whether to stay.

That second audience is the one most people forget. They stuff keywords, hit the word count, and wonder why the post ranks for a week and then slides. Good seo writing serves both at once, and it has since long before AI tools made thin content cheap to produce.

What Is PPC? Pay-Per-Click Explained for Calgary

PPC stands for Pay-Per-Click. It is the advertising model where you only pay when someone actually clicks your ad. Google Ads is the largest PPC platform, but PPC also runs on Microsoft Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, and most other ad networks. If your business has ever bought a sponsored result at the top of a Google search, that was PPC.

Quick disambiguation: in Canadian search, PPC also returns results about the People’s Party of Canada. This article is about pay-per-click advertising, not the political party.

Does Google Use Meta Keywords? | Calgary SEO

No. Google does not use the meta keywords tag, and has not for well over a decade. Type your top phrases into that hidden field all you want. Google ignores every one of them. The tag stopped counting as a ranking signal back in 2009, and the search engine has been blunt about it ever since.

That surprises people. Plenty of Calgary business owners still hand us a site where someone stuffed a long meta keywords tag into the page head, convinced it was doing something. It was not. We have been running white hat SEO since 2007, and pulling dead meta keywords out of page templates is still a routine first-week job. Worth knowing why the tag died, and what Google reads instead. If you came here after searching how to add meta keywords in WordPress, the steps are easy enough. The payoff is zero.

How to Add Meta Keywords in WordPress

A client emailed last month asking why his competitor outranked him. His theory: the other site must have better meta keywords. So he wanted me to stuff a long list of keywords into every page on his WordPress site and watch the rankings climb. I added the tag for him, because he asked. Then I showed him his own analytics, where that field had changed nothing for eleven years running.

That is the honest starting point for this guide. You can add the keywords tag in WordPress in about a minute, and this page shows you three ways to do it. What it also tells you, which most tutorials bury near the bottom, is that Google stopped reading the keywords field in 2009. As SEO practitioners in Calgary we still get the request, so here is both the how and the why-it-barely-matters, in one place.

How to Check Competitors’ Google Ads: Free and Paid Tools

Knowing how to check competitors google ads usually starts with the wrong expectation: that one magic dashboard exists. It does not. What you get instead is a stack of free tools and a couple of paid ones, each showing a slice. Ads serving right now. The search terms behind them. Roughly how often a rival shows up against you. Stitch those slices together and a working picture appears. SEO Company To-The-TOP! has read these signals for Calgary advertisers since 2007, and the honest version is that the data points a direction, it does not hand you exact figures.

Worth saying up front: none of this is spying in any real sense. The ads are public. Google publishes them. Your competitors see yours the same way. What separates a useful audit from an afternoon of clicking around is knowing which signal answers which question.

What Is Technical SEO? How It Works and Why It Matters

Most SEO problems I diagnose trace back to technical issues the site owner has never noticed. A page that search engines cannot crawl cannot rank, regardless of how well the content is written or how many links point at it. Technical SEO is the work that makes your website readable and rankable by search engines: the infrastructure layer that crawlability, indexation, and performance all depend on, and that every other SEO effort runs on top of.

Calgary SEO work often begins with a technical pass before touching any content, because a crawl block or a page speed failure quietly cancels the gains from everything else. It is the reason good content sometimes ranks poorly, and why a proper audit always starts below the surface of your site. If this layer feels unfamiliar, how to learn SEO builds it up from the basics.
