Meta Keywords in SEO: What They Are and Why Google Ignores Them
Meta keywords are an HTML element that used to tell search engines what a webpage was about. Google announced in 2009 that it does not use the meta keywords field for ranking. Nothing has changed that position since. The code still exists in the HTML specification, but adding or removing it has no effect on where your pages appear in search results.
Confusion about meta keywords usually comes from two places. One: SEO tools still show the field in their interfaces, which implies it matters. Two: the term sounds similar to “SEO keywords,” which absolutely do matter. These are different things. Knowing the difference saves time and prevents misplaced effort. As a company that has been providing Calgary SEO services since 2007, we have watched the meta keywords question resurface every couple of years: the answer has not changed.
Is .com Better for SEO?
For ranking, no. Nothing about ending in .com lifts a page, and the newer extensions carry no handicap either. A Canadian ending does carry a small geographic signal on Canadian searches. That effect is real and modest. It is also written up elsewhere on this site.
So take the ranking answer as settled. Then notice how little it covers. Your domain does almost no work in front of a search engine. Yet it works hard in a place nobody thought to check.
Do Backlinks Help SEO?
Clients ask this question constantly. Backlinks still matter significantly. The mechanics of how they matter have shifted since 2007, though. After 19 years running a search engine optimization company in Calgary and across western Canada, this is what we actually observe.
A backlink is a link from one website pointing to yours. Search engines treat these connections as editorial votes. More votes from credible, relevant sources translate to stronger positions in search results. That reasoning traces back to Google’s original PageRank system, and it still holds.
What Is Crawling in SEO?
Had a client frustrated that a new service page sat invisible after six weeks live. Good content. Solid keyword targeting. Still invisible. A noindex tag left over from the staging environment was the culprit. Googlebot had been visiting the page since launch, reading that noindex instruction each time, silently excluding it from indexing. No errors in Search Console. That is what happens when crawling on your site goes wrong without any obvious signal to the owner.
Search engines cannot rank pages they have not found. Pages search engines have not yet seen: crawling is what finds them. Crawlers, also called spiders, follow links across the web. One URL to the next. Each page gets read. Then that information goes back to be stored. Content, structure, and metadata on your website all factor into what gets recorded. Google’s crawler is Googlebot. Bing runs Bingbot. Appearing in search results starts with a visit from one of these bots. No crawl visit, no chance at ranking.
How to Search for a Keyword in Excel When Reviewing Research Data
Keyword research exports pile up fast. A single pull from Ahrefs or Semrush can run thousands of rows deep. Finding one specific keyword in that mess needs more than scrolling.
Ctrl+F works for a quick lookup. The heavier lifting falls to filters and formulas instead.
How Local SEO Increases Profits
Ask how local SEO increases profits and the answer arrives fast. You show up in the map pack. More people nearby find you. The phone rings more often. So more customers, and more money.
Every word of that is true. It is also most of what anybody writes about, and this site covers it elsewhere. The Google Business Profile work. Then citations and local links. Reviews, and the landing pages. Whatever content goes on them. Sound advice, so none of it gets repeated here.
Do Fonts Matter for SEO?
Not in the direction you are probably asking.
No typeface will lift a ranking. Several font decisions can cost you one. That gap is the entire answer. Worth sitting with for a moment, before anybody starts arguing about serifs.
How to Make Money With SEO
SEO generates money through two distinct paths: selling it as a service, or using it to generate passive income through your own websites. Both work. Which one is right depends on whether you want to trade time for money immediately or invest time in building assets that earn on their own.
The service path produces income faster. Clients pay monthly for SEO work, and someone with basic skills can start landing paid work within weeks of learning the fundamentals. The asset path takes longer — affiliate sites and niche blogs take months to generate meaningful money — but the income compounds over time without requiring the same ongoing client management.
What Is CTR in SEO and How to Calculate It Correctly
Click-through rate. The percentage of people who see a listing in search results and actually click it. Simple math, real consequences for how a page performs. Click through rate gets abbreviated CTR almost everywhere in SEO reporting.
Clicks divided by impressions, times one hundred. That’s the whole formula.
Do Facebook Reviews Help SEO?
No. Not in any way that shows up in a rank tracker.
Still, the question hides something worth having. Every Facebook recommendation is a receipt from a sale that skipped Google entirely. Read enough of them and you learn which words your customers use for the thing you sell. That part is genuinely useful.
